Bangalore: Instilling civic sense - A garland of shame for urinating in public

Bangalore, Dec 14 (DHNS): Urinating in public could never be more fetching. Set aside the relief, it will also earn you a garland.

While public urination would have attracted penalties in the past, now it would earn a ring of flowers around the violator’s neck, though it would not be hard for a sensible person to be stung by embarrassment even by the harmless act. Of course, the violator can also see his picture getting noticed on social media platforms.

The move against public urination is a novel campaign by a local radio station in partnership with the City police. Though “Be a true Bangalorean” was launched on December 1, it took off on Thursday. The campaign will be on till the first week of January 2014.

Besides those urinating in public, those littering footpaths, honking needlessly in traffic, parking on pavements and teasing girls will all get the plastic flower garlands.

Barely a day after taking off, it has spotted and shamed 50 persons, and the number is likely to increase. “The concept behind the campaign is to make every Bangalorean love the City they live in. During the campaign, a large number of  people were found urinating on streets and a few of them in front of the wall with the  writing: Do not urinate here. We made such people pledge that they won’t repeat it,” said radio station staffer Yeshwant Raj.

The radio station has roped in eight men who are not only spreading the word around different neighbourhoods about catching the violators, but are also keeping tabs themselves.

The team has covered Shanthinagar, Ulsoor, J C Road, Vittal Mallya Road and a few others in the Central Business District so far.

While the public may appreciate a spirited campaign to keep the City clean, a “true Bangalorean” will also end up thinking what other options a man desperate to relieve himself would have since public toilets are either locked or unusable. Perhaps, he would recommend the volunteers to ready a set of garlands for the civic authorities, too!

A garland is a flop idea. will not work...!!!
If people will stop urinating their kidney may gets failure. Only solution is more and more paid toilets. If you cant build toilets because of any reason, you can install a temporary movable fibre toilets.

Provide properly maintained toilets in every 200 meters in the city. Give proper security around the clock so it may not be used to rape or kill. Put cc cameras to monitor the area. Than the things will automatically fall in order. If the city authorities are in out of order how do they expect public in proper order. Make the possibility to fall the things in order through the facility to the needy.

It does not look nice. He may feel like neta or MLA. Some culprits may urinate for garlanding purpose also. Some fine must be there, say Rs.50/- 1st time, Rs.100/- second time, Rs.500/- for third time offence. First thing let there be, many urinals in the city. Mostly visitors do not know what to do when they drink soft drinks or coconut water in the city.

Yes, I do agree with the most of the readers that let authorities provide urinals enough with hygienic, operating round the clock, cleaning staff, free or paid.

Then implement strict fine/garlanding whatever suitable action.

But I think some guys still living in our society who urinating like dog to the outside wall of the same urinal shed!!! no time to go inside!
Such rogues deserved garland of footwear...

You cannot enforce such rules for nature's acts which becomes uncontrollable during urgency. Otherwise have you’ll heard of the Mumbai Paani Puri Vendor Urinates in the cup he uses to serve customers. GROSS.!.!. Because he was not given a chance to pee on the streets. Watch YOUTUBE…..

We are proud to humiliate people for the act of urinating in public but do we have toilets in all important locations? Are they color coded for a common man to easily recognize and use? Do the private buildings have usable urinals for the people who come into these buildings? Do the restaurants have toilets for customers? Are the public toilets maintained with minimum hygiene standards?

If your answer is NO then where else can you urinate? Why humiliate?

Indians as a Class have no civic sense. The whole of India is a Public Toilet. You can see people Spitting on the roads, throwing litter from moving vehicles, washing their hands and rinsing their mouths using water bottles after eating in their cars, defecating on the roads / by the side of the rail tracks, urinating on walls and in public gardens, spitting red paan on staircases, throwing garbage on to the road from their balconies, dumping garbage in open garbage bags in street corners et., the list is endless,,,,,,, No wonder Mr. Narendar Modi the BJP PM designates said publicly that he would prefer more Toilets to Temples. On another note, the pathetic state of the restrooms all over India be it in Bus stands / Railway stations (even the trains) gardens etc.,will make one throw up instantly....we have a long way to go before we respect ourselves and others .. so a good start but I for one feel nothing will improve unless we have the Strict Singapore type laws on public cleanliness

Hygienic sense is very important and it is a responsibility of civic administration as well as citizens!
Collecting fines, embarrassing violators etc. is o.k. but not enough.
Civic admin. should provide clean Toilets and dustbins at all junctions.
Mere collecting fines or embarrassing will defeat the purpose of instilling civic sense.
People will be compelled urinate in public in the absence of Toilets.
What Mr. Modi and Jairam Ramesh said that Toilets are important than Temples.

In India everything is the fundamental rights of the people. Some are claiming whatever dress wearing is their fundamental right, someone is fighting with the government that Gay sex is their fundamental right than may some people will not fight that urinating, spitting on the road is their fundamental right?
