Bangalore-Hyderabad Volvo mishap: Driver was on double duty, fire crackers in bus

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI): The driver of the ill-fated Hyderabad-bound Volvo bus was overstressed and there were fire crackers inside the vehicle, according to findings of an investigation that probed two recent road mishaps in which 52 persons were killed.

The investigation has said that "the driver was overstressed. He could not find brake and was assigned on double duty," Road Transport and Highways Minister Oscar Fernandes told PTI.

"There were fire crackers also in the Bangalore-Hyderabad bus," he added.

In the first accident on October 30, 45 passengers were burnt alive as the Volvo bus they were travelling from Bangalore to Hyderabad burst into flames after its fuel tank caught fire on hitting a culvert at Mahboobnagar in Andhra Pradesh.

The bus might have caught fire due to a spark and fire crackers might have exploded, the Minister said.

In the second incident on November 14, seven passengers were killed and 40 injured when a Mumbai-bound bus from Bangalore caught fire after hitting a road median at Haveri in Karnataka.

The causes behind the second accident are being ascertained, Fernandes said.

Meanwhile, a preliminary report by Accident Data Analysis Centre of National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project has said that the buses had wooden flooring and inflammable seats and the speed limit was also high, according to sources.

The Minister said he would personally monitor accident cases and ensure measures to prevent road accidents.

Last month, a Parliamentary panel had said it would seek a report from the Road Transport and Highways Ministry on the recent Volvo bus accidents in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

"Are there something in Indian conditions that Volvo has not taken into account or is there something wrong in the manner in which our people are operating these buses?

"These have to be seriously considered. The committee will enquire into it," Sitram Yechury, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, had said wondering how the accidents were occurring when the buses were built on international standard.

Expressing concerns over the rising number of road accidents Fernandes said: "We cannot afford to become complacent. Strengthening motor vehicle related legislation will certainly expedite our progress on the path towards safer roads." The death toll in road accidents reached 1.38 lakh in 2012.

It is the disaster to travel in A/C volvo bus. We too had the bad experience in volvo bus where we travelled Mangalore to Mysore once and the bus broke down in the middle of the night leaving all the passengers in middle of the thick forest area, that too it was rainy season. 3-4 hours all were on road, later another bus came to take us to our destination. Like planes there should be thorough checkup of the vehicle before it starts its journey, good drivers with plenty of good rest and additional driver, where there should be a attender to check the condition and well being of all passengers occasionally and there should be a first aid box too. As travelling by road is too dangerous and risky drivers should be trained and should have concern and bother about others lives too. RIP to all deceased.

    Hello,

you are right, Volvo bus is built on international standard What about roads? We cant even call them 3rd class too. They are worst than that.. We can ask the volvo bus companies to test their buses on indian roads Kundapoora , mangalore, karkala roads, if they pass here, I am damn sure they can send their buses to any country without any test required.

We entrust our lives in the hands of drivers.
Drivers are human carriers, they should be given health and safety training!
They should also be paid fairly and their duty hours and health should be monitored like Pilots!
Our RTO rules are outdated, it is high time to re-write the rules and regulations and enforce them to reduce road accidents!

I think there was no much time for anyone to open emergency exit as the fire was so huge in the first accident, but in the later one passengers managed to break window glasses and came out, so the death toll was less.

What went wrong with the emergency exit? Please never board a bus for a long journey - if not being operated with two drivers. Make it mandatory to have two drivers in the bus ........for a long journey.

Thanks dear. But I knew that before. Even NH48 renamed to NH75. But we are used to NH17, we still refer same name.

When this govt can't repair the road, they just change the name.
