Mangalore, Dec 18: At the nation-wide call for strike given by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) comprising of nine different trade unions in the banking sector, more than 300 bank employees in the city held a demonstration in front of Canara Bank at Balmatta here on Wednesday December 18 urging wage revision and other demands.

In Udupi, the bank employees held their demonstration at Udupi Syndicate Bank Catholic Centre.

Across the country, approximately 10 lac bank employees and officers of public sector banks, private banks and foreign banks observed a one-day all India strike on December 18.

The protestors demanded immediate wage revision settlement and protesting against the ongoing banking sector reforms.

The UFBU stated in a release that it had submitted a charter of demand before the expiry of the previous wage accord on October 31 2012. "In spite of several rounds of discussion, there is no breakthrough in negotiations. During the Bipartite Settlement, theIndian Banks' Association (IBA) had agreed for 17.5% increase in the wage bill. The Sixth pay commission pay scales have made bank jobs least attractive in the market besides the additional burden of accountability, transfer-ability and late working hours in banks.

"In the light of the announcement of the seventh pay commission by the government, the bank employees feel let down by the government and the IBA. The IBA had met UFBU leadership on December 14 at Mumbai wherein they had offered a paltry increase of 5% in pay which was rejected by UFBU. The conciliation proceedings called by the chief labour commissioner Delhi on December 16 ended in a failure as there was improved offer from IBA.

"More than ten lac bank employees are hence observing a one day token strike on December 18 in response to the call given by UFBU demanding a early wage revision," the release stated.

The comments on this page should be eye openers to bank employees in particular and public sector employees in general. People are getting frustrated with the attitude of our elected leaders, government officers, public sector employees. They seem to be taking people for granted.

Mr. Banker, I agree with your sentiments. But unfortunately not many here are willing to understand your side. All that some people want here is to make some Bollywood style statements without showing any sensitivity. Yes I agree that the customer suffers, but if there are genuine concerns of the bankers which are not addressed by the govt what else they should do? This is a loss of pay day for bankers who are protesting. I wish good luck for the bankers and hope they get the justice and customers also get back to normal services.

Nice time bank employees are having. even during work hours, good time they have doing limited work. Big salaries and big perks and still not happy.
then join private sector and you will be happier.
    bigger salaries and bigger perkks.

simple. do not hold the banks to ransom but not allowing transactions.

you dont want to work, leave. simple solution. why all this drama.

International banks have failed miserably in USA and other European countries they are emulating Indian banking industry. Let us retain public sector character of our industry for the welfare of our poor people.

Dear Banker reply from another Banker. Passing exam and getting job in the bank is not banker. Banking means selling services to the public but you are not doing so. Please note that our Nationalized are running on public money... if Banker lends to the public, but he is not taking responsibility but the Government has to pay to the bank against NPA's. So please don't tell that our nationalized are better than private banks.

    Dear Commentators,

I read all your comments and surprised to note that all you people are against the strike. Its true that strike is not necessary. One of the commentator expressed her view that bankers come running for deposits but when it comes to loans bankers run away..Being a Banker putting up 6 years experience, I opine the following:=
    1) Increased workload and less staff has affected the customer service ( More staff means higher operational costs for Banks)
    2) All the Government officers/ staff/sub staff have got their salary revised as per the pay commission, but for banks the revision is due from one year
    3) The first commentator commented about unemployed youth - Common mam I was too unemployed and has worked hard and got this job..
    4) Strike is not to harass the people. But, many negotiations had taken place between UFBU and IBA , but no settlement reached coz lack of interest from IBA.
    5) First of all, we the bankers are the losers as it is called LOSS OF PAY day.
    6) Working in a bank in the present era is not a fancy thing. It needs self motivation, confidence and EQ coz, unregulated working hours, high targets
    7) INFLATION -Major worry, coz though our DA increases it is not enough to look after ones family...
    8) In a Bank, Basic pay is very minimal not like the fancy amount what other MNCs and govt offices are paying. If you think that is enough to live in this present day, then please go ahead and comment

GOD BLESS THOSE WHO HATE BANKERS ...I PITY BANKERS WHO HAVE COME UP IN LIFE WITH LOT OF STRUGGLE

The banking sector employees has been very well taken care off.Its a routine job for 90% of the employees. They should be penalised and their salaries deducted. Ask for a loan and no one has time and say you want to deposit money they entire branch will be behind you !!BANKING system needs a major revamping especially PSU's really dont see beyond traditional lending areas. The number of VC's funding in new tehcnologies and areas is just not enough for India to grow. PSU's should park atleast 5%funds for startup's

Banking Reforms are done to keep our Banking Sector in line with International Standard. But Bank Union Leaders always want to walk backwards. In 1990-95 they protested against introduction of Computerization & CBS in banks and many times they went on strike for the same. But see today, not only Customers, but Bank employees themselves cannot live without Computers,CBS, ATMs.

Yes, surely this type of protest/strike is putting the customers in very bad situation. When you visit some of the bank branches for your banking purpose, the computers will be down (No networking),No power or the manager is sick/vacation. These are standard answers we get from the Counter Staff.

There should be some limit on this type of protest/strike.

These banking employees only know to go on protests, care a damn about their customers. Pity such thoughts. Customers are always put into inconvenience. We need to put an end to this. Find alternate solutions, other than closing banks and inconveniencing public.
