Pune: Salute! 61-year-old sari-clad granny wins marathon

Daijiworld Media Network

Pune, Dec 19: They say you are as old as you feel at heart. A 61-year-old granny has proved this adage beyond any doubt by winning a marathon barefoot, leaving all other experienced runners and trained athletes far behind.

As reported by the Daily News & Analysis (DNA), athletes and spectators were left open-mouthed in awe of the sari-clad Lata Bhagwan Kare who won the race at Baramati. Not only did she win, Lata even left all other athletes far behind within minutes of the start.

"When I came to know about the competition, I decided to participate in the event. I gathered courage and informed my son that I wanted to run the marathon. Initially, he gave me a weird look as in his opinion it was not possible, given my age. But I was determined, so he finally gave in," the DNA quoted her.

Kare also told DNA that this was her maiden run and that while many of the competitors seemed to give her a complex because she was not dressed like them, she ran the entire race all the while telling herself that she simply had to succeed. She hails from a place named Pimpli, which is 7 km from Baramati and is a farm labourer. She had moved here from Buldhana district in search of work.

Wearing a simple nauvari (9 yard) sari in the Marathi style of draping, Kare caught everyone's attention with her simple, rural ensemble. She began the race with her slippers on, but when one broke mid-way she simply left the other one as well and arrived at the finish line barefoot.

In her interview with DNA, she said while she goes for long walks every morning, she had not tried her hand at running as she felt people would ridicule the sight of her running. Kare lives with her husband and a son at Pimpli village.

A grand salute to the lady for displaying true spirit and proving that age is no barrier if one has the will to succeed.

Hi Lata and to the Editor, Lata Madam, you are amazing and definitely and an inspiration. This is SANTA. I can contribute money to the cost of buying a pair of runners. Can I request the Editor to contact me by email and give me bank details so that I can transfer some money which will meet Lata Madam's expenses towards the above. Thanks for your assistance.

    Dear Fred,
Sorry for being skeptical. In the article if it had been mentioned that she won the race in female senior citizen's category I would not have doubted. Article and photo creates an impression that she beat male/female contestants of all age groups.
I congratulate Lata Baghwan on winning the 3km Marathon in senior citizen's category.

Call me skeptical, but for one, Barramati marathon is scheduled on Jan 2014 and her name is not mentioned in the list of 2013 winners
    Secondly,
I believe that this lady would have finished the marathon, & I mean no disrespect to her, but I am really skeptical about an amateur winning the race on her maiden-run.
Thirdly, this news has just been reported by one news source which has just one poor quality picture (See carefully there is no shadow of her visible on photo although sunlight directly falls on her. Tell tale signs of a typical cut photoshop picture). The article does not give any details of her time/ category either.
    All this is very fishy.

This 65-year-old ran a 3-km race in 9-yard sari to pay for husband's MRI

Her son forbade her from running the marathon in Baramati as she was running a temperature the night before. But she defied him. Too much was at stake for her to let it go. She ran, and won. And now, she is an inspiration for miles around her village. She ran to win, hoping she would bag the prize, Rs 5,000 cash money, with which she wanted to pay for the medical treatment of her ailing husband, Bhagwan.

“When I heard about the marathon first, I instantly felt like being a part of it. But what really lured me was the prize money of Rs 5,000 for the winner. We very much needed money for my husband’s treatment.

Doctors have asked him to get an MRI scan done - he has a heart problem – and for this we have to collect Rs 15,000-20,000,” says Kare to MiD DAY.

Kare works as a farm hand at the fields of the more affluent in her village, making Rs 80-100 in a day. The mother of four, and grandmother of one, resides in a 10x15 sq feet room with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and grandson.

Her family shifted to Pimpli from Buldhana four years ago in search of work. But steady employment eludes them even here.

Kare got to know of the marathon from her neighbor, Sudhir Sakat, while she was still trying to figure out how to get together enough money to pay for the MRI for Bhagwan. Another neighbour put it in her head that the prize money would solve her dilemma.

    THIS IS THE ACTUAL TRUTH
