Bangalore: 'Forced' religious conversion is wrong, says Dalai Lama

Bangalore, Jan 6 (DHNS): The 14th Dalai Lama has disapproved of “forced” religious conversion. Religious organisations ought to work extensively in rural villages and “expect nothing” (in return), he said here on Sunday.

“Christians have helped the society in education and health. But they are also carrying the message of conversion, which is wrong. The Ramakrishna organisations are working extensively in rural areas, which most people neglect. They do not expect anything. Such should be the attitude,” he said at the inauguration of the 92nd principals’ conference organised by the Association of Heads of Anglo-Indian Schools in India.

The Tibetan spiritual leader described corruption as “the biggest cancer in any society” and said India had to tackle it immediately. It could not be taken lightly anymore. Right education, moral principles, discipline and inner peace were the only way to fight corruption, he added.

“I have met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a few occasions and spoken to him about corruption and how it is affecting people. But we did not have a serious talk. Removing corruption is not easy. People should take special note of it and remove corrupt officials from government. This is the right time to do so and media should play a vital role in bringing corrupt officials to light. They should be exposed,” he said. He described India as a very strong democratic nation compared with Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Education ‘materialist’

The Dalai Lama termed the existing modern education system “very material-oriented”. “People are very materialistic... Humanity is neglected. Eductional institutions should discuss on how to introduce and put more effort to inculcate inner values in children for holistic brain development.

Children should be smart and not self-centred. Right education should not be disturbed.”

Lazy student

The Dalai Lama said he was a very lazy student. “I always wanted to play and never study. I was scared of my teacher and his whip. So I would study, but was poor in it. But today’s children are very sharp and bright.”

Aadhaar card

Dalai Lama, who says he is the longest guest in India, recently applied for an Aadhaar card. Nandan Nilekani, the chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) who was present at the event, said, “He has enrolled but is yet to get it, like many others. Around 540 million Indian residents have obtained Aadhaar cards and Rs 40 million cash transactions have taken place of the 50 million people.”

Nilekani said India had the largest number of engineering graduates and school dropouts. “Around half of Indian children cannot read and around 75 per cent cannot solve a division problem. All children should be given equal opportunities to grow because India, including Bangalore, needs successful bright students.”

I am not sure when we Christians will stop from being politically correct ,the same Dalai lama was invited to I think St Joseph College Bangalore and he had mentioned the same thing now It is the Anglo Indian meet( I presume the organizers are Christians) , let us not provide a chance for anybody to bad mouth us , I don't think there are any records/cases of forced conversions. I wish Dalai Lama doesn't use christian platform to criticize Christianity or Christians.

    Dear Juliet.. you are wrong!
Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader, majority respects him and he is well wisher of our country.
Christianity helped society in education, health and success of this mainly coz of majority support one should not forget!! The conversion itself a curse, which really hurt the majority
and if you talks 75%..its rubish!..Hindus are not fools to accept having Hindu religion also good teachings. Stop conversion of any sort and try to good with majority for peace and harmony

Before commenting on people who convert to Christianity Dalai Lama must speak about the thousands of people in Maharastra, Gujarat and other states who are converting to Buddhism. Several places across the nation people are being lured to convert to Buddhism in order to shun their backward status in Hinduism

Dalai Lama is one of the greatest spiritual gurus in this universe right now..Recently,during my vacation,I visited Golden Temple in Bailu koppa, near Kushalnagar (Tibet of Karnataka).Atmosphere in that temple just makes one speechless..Sometimes, I think..if Dalai Lama had not requested refugee status from Govt of India or if Govt of India had refused refugee status to Dalai Lama & CO..Chinese would not have attacked India and they would have been in good terms with us even now..But,there is no value for word "IF"

About corruption,Mr.Dalai Lama spoke to wrong person. He talked to the Head of the Dept(Corruption). After LS election,Mr.Dalai Lama can give his opinion to new PM who will be from different party.

And about religious conversion,Dalai Lama spoke very correctly. He spoke about FORCED conversion only. There are some groups like NEW LIFE and other missionaries are seriously involved in conversion..One can't deny it..Because of this group, hard working and social working missionaries get bad name.

    Yes Dalai Lama is right.
But personalities of his stature rather have to work towards "Religious Freedom" or Right bestowed by UN, but is trampled & persecutions are the norm in many countries all over the world, where majority or communists never allow Religious Freedom & Practice, till today.

The disagree to my comment is mounting.Tell me on what point you disagree with me.
1.It's mentioned DL says he is the longest guest in India. Is he not enjoying the luxuries of our soil.
2.He has mentioned in his speech 'Christians have helped the soceity in education and health. But they are also carrying the message of conversion which is wrong'.For the information of those who are unaware,Christians carry the message of faith and not conversion.Christ came to the world carrying the message of peace which is spread throughout the world by his followers through faith. This is a religion widely accepted throughout the world. If this is done by force,by now 75% of the Indian population would have been christians and they would not have remained in the minority list.Millions of Indians have taken education and treatment from the institutions run by them. Now tell me Whether this person is in his senses.
Buddhism is fast spreading in Manga lore. Try to locate the reason behind this before Hinduism is replaced by Buddhism.

Some people should get their words right, He Dalai Lama is mentioned as His Holiness same as our Pope, For you he is an old man but for the whole world he is a spiritual and political leader of Tibet, though he currently lives in exile, because of the Chinese. Hope this would serve your requirement.
