Mid-Day

Mumbai, May 21: The underworld has rechristened Bollywood.

In an attempt to confuse anti-piracy cells in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Dubai, Malaysia and Bangkok, bhais have come up with new nicknames for actors and actresses, based largely on recent roles or makeovers.

On a recent raid in Ulhasnagar, the anti-piracy cell stumbled upon an audio file in a sub-dealer’s mobile, which revealed the latest codenames for Bollywood.

Salman Khan is ‘takla hatela’ while Amitabh Bachchan is ‘chyawanprash’. Aishwarya is the ‘kajrawali’ and Mallika Sherawat the ‘item bomb’.

“The underworld has a new code,” said MM Satish, president of T-Series Public Performance Licence.

Satish, supervises raids across Asia with the assistance of the Mumbai anti-piracy cell, added that Islamabad and Malaysia were the hubs of printing pirated copies for Bollywood films, mainly controlled by gangster Chhota Shakeel’s company, Sadaf Video.

Confirming the new naamkaran, Shahebaz Khan, senior detection officer of the anti-piracy cell, said, “The 90-second conversation was indeed a bouncer for us. We were startled at the new names for Bollywood stars, which we had to decode.”

Khan added, “The conversation we came upon was between a Karachi-based piracy dealer and an Indian distributor on the recent profits and losses.”

More to decode

Both Khan and Satish said they were yet to decode the entire conversation, which they said would disclose more details about their deals and hawala of pirated prints in Mumbai.
