Udupi, Feb 10: A Protestant prayer group at Marpalli here was reportedly asked by the police to vacate the place within a month, after locals complained that the group had been putting pressure on a widow to join the group and also creating disturbance in the area with late night prayer meets.

The prayer group, led by a person named Satish Ammanna, has been conducting prayers meets at a rented house near Mahalingeshwari Temple at Marpalli for the last four years.

Renuka, a widow and anganwady teacher by profession stays close to the prayer group's house. Renuka's husband is said to have committed suicide some months ago and ever since then the prayer group was reportedly putting pressure on her to join them. They had even conducted prayers in her house on a few occasions, it is said.

Renuka, who resigned from panchayat membership to teach at an anganwady, had resisted the pressure to join the prayer group. However, on Saturday February 8 matters came to a boil when Renuka firmly told the group to back off and in return was allegedly threatened by the group.

On Sunday February 9, the situation escalated further after the prayer group's house was pelted with stones resulting in damage. The group approached the police alleging that locals who were in support of the lady had committed the act.

Renuka was called to the police station, and when she came, several locals also accompanied her. The locals complained to the police that the prayer group had been creating disturbance in the area with prayer meets that go past midnight on Wednesdays. People from various places come in several vehicles to attend the prayer meets, said the locals.

The police, however did not register complaints from either side, but visited the prayer group's house to inspect and asked Satish Ammanna to vacate the house within a month.

Christians today always accuse non Christians. How about this? Is it allowed to convert throght fraud, cheating and force in Christianity? Using others weakness, paying money, indirect or direct force are all wrong methods. Protestants unfortunately do not follow the great leader Martin Luther and are after money. As per genuine Christianity only those who accept Jesus with clear conscience are Christians and not under the influence of money, weaknesses such as poverty, illness, etc. Many Christians are doing charity with the sole aim of converting other which is again wrong. People are attracted to Jesus. One need not apply these kind of cheap tactics

These groups target weak people like widows, sick, poor and kids.. They get money from outside and they lure them by gifts And stuff..and many by playing mental games..(if u dont convert disease wont be cured) and there should be strict law against such conversions.

Nobody has the rights to force someone into other religion. Prayers are supposed to be offered in meeting halls and church, not at home disturbing the neighbors. Everyone has their own rights to do anything but not to create nuisances.

Why these people want to conduct prayers in somebody's rented house and disturb the neighbors. Keep the prayers in the church or public hall. Creating trouble unnecessary.

Christians are expected to work as salt and yeast in food which need not be great in quantity, but being less should be good in quality. The anti conversion law will never affect the Christians in India or around the world.

Prayer groups should not disturb anybody, should not force. Prayer should be within 6 to 8 pm, not later than that. It can be at any churches, not in any houses.

Firstly, these antisocial elements should stop using methods like pelting stones, they are getting more bolder by the day ,yes, they can complain to anybody or protest, because religious policing and those actions depict a kind a serious kind of precedence in the future that it would be hard for it to be controlled by the authorities and would make peace with none.Secondly ,about conversion sometimes these groups seek out the most vulnerable and pity with them giving a feeling of belonging and get what they want. But hey, ours is a free country,..!!

The locals who complain about disturbances in the locality due to noise also think of sounds coming from the public mikes from religious places, be it on a daily basis or during some festivals. I Just wonder how people occupy public roads for their processions during religious functions and disturb the peace. The law should be same for all.

    Chandran,

We must remember that the time when one's spouse passes away is very sympathetic and people call-in to offer solace. The lady may have innocently allowed them in. I have resisted such people barging in with great difficulty. Yes, I a RC have been subjected to such situation, as such, this lady need not be an exception.

I commend her for the way she has fought it off.

Anti-conversion laws are now in force in five states – Gujarat, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh, and they have been passed but are yet to be implemented in Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan states.

Note: Most of the states are BJP governed.

With Modi as PM expects Anti Conversion Law throughout India.

All religions are good and there is no need for anybody to change his/her religion! Anybody forcing others to change their religion must be punished! Living as a human being by doing their best to the fellow beings is the real religion. God didn't create any religion !

A very good act by Police. There are many legally approved churches where people can gather and pray without causing any troubles to neighbors.

The Police did the right thing by asking the group to vacate the premises. Allowing them to continue will cause uncalled for troubles for other denominations who render valuable services to the society.

There are dedicated places for prayer. If someone privately conducts prayer meets and insists on individuals' participation, it's natural that there is something fishy about their functioning.

    Jatin,

You missed out a very important word from what I have been bellowing at the top of my voice - 'FORCED'. Mind you, our constitution promises religious freedom to the citizens of India and I respect my constitution. Hope you too do.

Moreover, please note that I don't belong to the denomination that is in question here and my message about 'other denominations' contributing to social causes did exactly refer to the one I am affiliated to.

Secondly, nowhere in the news has it been mentioned that the woman was 'converted' ? Are you using some magnifying objects to perceive what others can't since they read with normal vision ?

Something fishy . There is a missing link.

The widow allowed them to make prayers and then she resisted to join that group. First instance, why did she allow to make prayers?
Secondly, there is a law, no loud speakers or disturbance be made after 10.30 pm.
Thirdly police Dept has no right to vacate the rented house unless or otherwise it violates the terms and conditions in the rental contract or police must get a court notice to vacate. Why police not regd FIR against them if it was true.
Sometimes I wonder whether God really wants blood/prayers divisions in the mankind? NO!
HE needs nothing but A CLEAN HEART.
Because of this kind of incident the clean heart becomes a clean hatred heart. We should change the mindset and followings and try to respect every religion as God is ONE.
God is everywhere, especially he dwells in our hearts.
