Mangalore: Over 70 bodies backing Mar 3 bandh, bishop extends support

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Mar 2: "More than 70 organizations have come forward to support the voluntary district bandh scheduled for Monday March 3," said former MLA Vijaykumar Shetty who has been among the forefront in the movement against Yettinahole project or Netravati river diversion.

Addressing a press meet on Saturday March 1 he said, "We also approached colleges and bus associations, and they have assured of their support. Colleges having exams scheduled for March 3 have assured that they would postpone the exams," he said.

Commenting on the project’s DPR (detailed project report) he said, "Earlier, in DPR it was mentioned that there was about 24 TMC drinking water, but now it has reduced to 22 TMC.  If it is just drinking water project, 6-8 TMC water is required but this water is also pumped to Bangalore, Tumkur, and various other places. EI Technology has no experience in undertaking this kind of project."

Slamming Harsha Moily’s comment in support of Yettinahole project, Shetty said, "Harsha Moily is known to the party people since just two months. He has no experience. Let him invite experts to discuss about this project."

M G Hegde, P V Mohan, and Dinesh Holla spoke on this occasion.

Denis D’Silva, Dinkar Shetty, and Shashiraj Shetty were present.

Bishop Dr Aloysius extends support

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore(MD)

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza has in a statement expressed his support to the district bandh on March 3 in protest of Yettinahole project.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza said, "Netravati river is coastal people's lifeline. Already in various parts of Mangalore people are suffering due to shortage of drinking water. Farmers are also facing shortage of water for their agricultural activities. If people try to change the direction of the naturally flowing Netravati river, it will be a big disaster in future. The surroundings, water and other natural resources belong to the people who live in that particular place. Without asking opinion of those people who live close to the river it is not at all right to approve this project. It is indeed regrettable."

He further added, "To protect the natural resources of Dakshina Kannada district, the people have called for a voluntary bandh on March 3, and I support them. I request the governent not to take water from Netravati river for the development of ponds and rain harvesting in Kolar and Chikballapur. The Catholic people of Mangalore will also join hands for the bandh on March 3. I request all the coastal people to support the bandh and to conduct themselves peacefully during the strike," he added.

Mangalore: Precautionary measures relating to bandh in place – DC

“The district administration has taken enough precautionary measures in the light of the district bandh call given by ‘Netravati Ulisi Horata Samiti’ in the district on Monday March 3,” said deputy commissioner of the district, A B Ibrahim.

Speaking to press persons here, Ibrahim informed that he had already consulted the leaders of the committee on the aspect of the bandh, and that the leaders have informed him that the bandh would be purely voluntary.  He said he would talk to the leaders of Bus Owners Association, as movement of private buses has been an important aspect in the lives of the people of the coast.

He clarified that elaborate arrangements will be made to ensure that the atmosphere is not vitiated during the period of the bandh, and that PU preparatory and SSLC examinations being held in various schools and colleges are organized without any hitch.

The Govt (both opposition and ruling), PWD, Irrigation, Drainage department, etc. cannot or not bothered to repair the leaking drainage in Mangalore. But have diverted the leaking drainage to open Gutters which is a serious health Hazard. Why cant they repair the leaking drainage rather than spending funds to divert the Nethravathi River.

    Dear kodialda muthu, mangalore,

Don't be so much selfish. Nobody from the twin districts, the companies, the organizations, the agitators or the government are ready to build Dams to any of the rivers.

If the government builds a Dam so much of the land will cover in water and these are the ones who commented here and the organizations who are going to agitate will be the first one to oppose the dams.

Our areca nut gardens are wet more than required from our bore wells from free electricity running relentlessly and we cannot quench our hunger in the areca nut.

We are depending on north Karnataka for rice, wheat, cereals and vegetables.

Do you have paddy fields in your kodial?! If you have, you might have sold the land to apartment builders.
Dear Kodial from where your rice is coming. Why we have to allow free flow of rainwater to the sea without utilizing rain water?!

    Why, Why, Why???!!!

I call all these agitators are selfish and brainless.

Don't think that the planners have dried up drinking water facilities to the twin district masses.

    Dear kodialda muthu, mangalore,

You don't want to build the dam and you are worried about your land.

This is the mentality of the people. My land should be safe and others land must be utilized....

In front of my house garbage box should not be there in others place no problem.

How much paddy fields are there in kudla now to cultivate and if so, why the vegetables, cereals and rice is brought down to Mangalore?!

If my land is drowning in the building of the dam i certainly give up my land. Don't worry.

Almost twin district people have abandoned paddy cultivation. I have gone round all over the twin districts.

No cooli people to cultivate agriculture. How many fields are vacant un-cultivated???!!!

THERE IS A PROVERB IN TULU

    KURIDH POUNDALA KORDH POYERE BALLI.

IF ROTTEN NO PROBLEM BUT SHOULD NOT GO bY GIVING.

This is the mentality of the our Kudla people.

    How to hide income tax?!

People make all the efforts, but they don't want to pay income tax to the government.

How much electricity theft is going on?!

How many gas cylinders on subsidy are used by the hoteliers?!

    People are so much selfish.
People may burn the currency notes, but will not give to the poor.

Remember, all the politicians have united - in this case the BJP and the Congress have joined hands because the politicians are going to get huge amounts of money at our cost. So now the people of this district should join together and teach these corrupt rogues a good lesson. D.K. is bestowed with plentiful of water, but, we have failed to harness it. The yearly flow of water from Netravati to Arabian sea is 2000 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) equivalent to 55,634 trillion litres sufficient for 80 years Mumbai water Supply (500MGD) and 2000 years for Mangalore at 80 MGD. This is only a mathematical calculation and a hypothetical situation, but, not a practicality.

First govt should build gigantic dams/reservoirs/water tanks and see that for the lean months, water is conserved. The water that is proposed to be diverted is just equivalent to Mumbai's supply (24 TMC) and should not be a problem, once the requirement of D.K. is fully met. After all, charity begins at home, but, does not end there.

The Government should immediately abandon the idea of diverting the water source.

The coastal region of Karnataka is rich with natural resources and the rainy season. We receive lots of rain for 4-5 months continuously from June to September but the God given water is just allowed to flow into to Arabian Sea which is wastage of natural resource. If our Govt build small small check dams in all the rivers in South Kanara the underground water level will increase and it will be a rich preservation for our future generations. Any of our Political Reps are serious about it?? They will not because they will earn nothing out of it for their party funds.

I am supporting the Yetthinahole project/Netravathi river diversion project irrespective party lines, region and Location be it was planned by any party.

We need our future generation to quench our thirst and hunger.
In the districts of Udupi and South Kanara we cannot quench our thirst and hunger by biting and chewing areca nut.
Let the north people have water to drink, cultivate rice, cereals and vegetables for us in their agriculture fields.
We, in both the twin district people claim as intelligent, but develop only real estates, apartment buildings and involved in quick-bucks and abandoned agriculture and depending upon the north for rice, wheat, meat, cereals and vegetables.
Instead of draining almost three fourth of rain water into the sea it is better to divert and utilize the water for drinking and for agricultural.

When the KRS dam was built by Sir M. Vishwesharayya people viewed Sir M. Vishwesharayya, a old man out of his mind and now themselves are keeping a photo and congratulating him daily.

In India or Karnataka, every PROJECT has supporters and opposers. Be it water project, road project, railway project, airport, Metro rail, power plant, SEZ, industrial layout, residential layout, etc. But what I have seen in my life so far is that concerned authority or Govt body listens to both the groups, discuss with them, convince them, give something else for them to compensate and they carry out the project. It does not mean that if some people stand against a project, it has to be ped. But there is a way to pacify them and carry out the project.

Now coming to this particular issue, just introspect how much respect this Govt has on coastal people. We have been completely sidelined and ignored. Govt has no courtesy to listen to us. They are single sided and on their way. 7 MLAs and 4 ministers of the district are part of this Govt. Does these men have any shame on them? At least, being representatives of the people of the district, did they speak to people on this issue? Why are they silent? Don't they have any little swaabhimaaana?

If this injustice happened to people of Mandya, can you imagine their reaction? They would have blocked all roads and trains until the project is withdrawn. Don't you think this Govt has taken coastal people for granted?

This Govt is interested only in developing Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli and Gulbarga. Why this Govt can't think about underground railway and road in shiradi ghat? If they showed interest in the development of the region, people might have supported Govt this time.

People of coast is completely divided on political lines, caste and religion. A least Vijay Kumar Shetty is able to get support from all sections of the society for tomorrow's bandh. This is a good sign. His last few protests, including one in Bangalore, had a poor response. Hope tomorrow's bandh will be a huge success.
