Three more infants die in drought-hit Pakistan area

Islamabad, March 14 (IANS): The severe drought in the Tharparkar district of Sindh in Pakistan has claimed the lives of three more infants raising the death toll to 140, media reported Friday.

One female infant died in a hospital at Islamkot while two male children died in the civil hospital at Mithi, The News International reported.

The female infant Rahila, born four days ago, passed away in the Islamkot hospital due to lack of medical facilities. Two-month-old Asif died on way to hospital and six-month-old Ramchand died on reaching the Mithi civil hospital.

Mithi hospital remains overcrowded with patients often being left unattended.

Relief work still continues in the drought-stricken area but providing relief in the remote areas continues to be a problem.

Earlier this week, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced a Pakistani Rs.1-billion (around $9.82 million) aid package for the drought-affected people.
