Kejriwal spends night in Tihar jail, AAP plans more protests

New Delhi, May 22 (NDTV): Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), spent the night in Delhi's Tihar jail after being arrested in a defamation case. Scores of his party men who protested outside the prison last night were also detained.

Mr Kejriwal was arrested on Wednesday after he refused to post bail in a case filed by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. He is likely to remain in jail at least till tomorrow.

After he was taken to jail, some 60 AAP supporters sat on the road outside and clashed with policemen, causing traffic chaos in the west Delhi area. Prohibitory orders were put in place and the protesters were bundled into buses.

The party has planned more protests today.

Among the AAP leaders who are still in detention are Mr Kejriwal's close aides Yogendra Yadav and Sanjay Singh.

"Still under detention at Hari Nagar police station. Not clear when they plan to release." Yogendra Yadav tweeted this morning.

Another AAP leader, Manish Sisodia was released this morning. He had tweeted last night, "Detained from Tihar & kept@Mundka PS. SHO has orders to keep me detained till tomorrow morning. but not able to tell charges against me (sic)."

Mr Kejriwal was summoned by the court on a complaint by Mr Gadkari, who had been named in AAP's list of "India's most corrupt" in January.

The AAP chief was asked to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 10,000 but he said he would not do so on principle, as he had not committed any crime. "I am ready to go to jail. We are setting precedence. I am not saying that give this treatment only to me. Give it to all," said the anti-corruption campaigner.

The AAP criticised the court for sending Mr Kejriwal to jail. "There is no provision in law which makes it mandatory for a defendant against whom a complaint is filed in a defamation case to furnish a bail bond," the party said in a statement.

The Congress and the BJP accused Mr Kejriwal of a "publicity stunt".

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted, "Kejriwal instead of doing NAUTANKI should join me in exposing Gadkari. He has also filed a defamation case in the same Court against me."

Yea, He had a problem with the government and now he's having problem with the Court and its rules, Quitting as CM is not mistaken to be forgiven, it's a Crime of showing fake dreams of people and running away! we dont need a prime minister like Kejiriwal, he may run next day after oath ceremony saying my garland was stinking, give a good garland for "Aam admi" .., in Short he was following principle "yeda banke peda khana" which dint work out so a full drama again or else he could have maintained peace by following court rules and worked hard to come back by gaining confidence among people.

Based on the comments here, it appears that Ghadkari did not indulge corrupt. His Putri companies did not have fake shareholders, he did not take money from PWD contractors who built the flyovers in Mumbai when he was Mayor, he is a paragon of virtue.

Bail is given by those who will run away, AK gave an assurance to the court that he would be present for each hearing in the court, yet the judge asked for Bail. Bail is given by criminals, not by those exposing someone else's corruption.

AK is one man who stepped up to fight corruption in India, instead of supporting him, people are throwing stones at him.

In a couple of years when they see the present dispensation having their own scams, they would know they have been robbed yet again.

The irony is that ever since AAP talked of the real hand of corrutpion in India, which is the Ambani empire, they are being attacked by all political parties and the beauracratic establishment.
And most sheeple are cheering it, not knowing they are being robbed.

No one wanted him to go to jail, he himself wanted to go , and if AAP has evidence against Gadkari, let them show in court, that they wont do, they will do all the drama but not that, they are even telling they will go door to door and show how corrupt Gadkari is, same thing can be done 1st in court right..
And how the brain less people support this joker.

You are absolutely right. Today's world is full of corruption. When we talk about anti-corruption, people think we are going back a 100 years. Everything has become so much acceptable and they will say - everywhere there is corruption otherwise we cannot live. This is the mentality of the people and that is why we can see from our present election, what people prefer. As you said media plays a very important role in misleading the people in many ways. If its paid media then the negatives will be exposed while the positives will be hidden. Nowadays people are so much dependent on the media that whatever the media exposes that is the gospel truth. And this was the reason for AAP's downfall. Today we find an innocent man in and corrupt people are out enjoying at our cost. Hope Mr. Kejriwal will be out soon and continue his movement to save the poor people of this nation. Our prayers are with him.

Don't dream man. If Kejriwal had not resigned as CM, he would have reduced the congress's 44 seats to 22. Be happy about your current tally. BJP is unaffected by this CRAZY WALA. You are the ones who got completely swept in Delhi in last December.

    @ dinesh kundapur,
not sure how many seats Congress would have secured if AAP performed well, but one thing was sure, election result would have been 'Hung Parliament'

People wanted change this time due to price rise, corruption etc & looking for alternative. But Keju bhai spoiled the show.
If AAP had won 30 seats, then you would have seen FEKU begging around amma Jayalalita, didi Mamta or even Keju for support to form Govt!!!

    say thanks to AAP now.

    @ Shankar Mlore,
Is AAP, Anpad Aadmi Party for you?

Just check educational qualification of candidates from 3 parties (AAP, Congress, BJP), contested in this Lok Sabha election.
AAP candidates stands first (most qualified), Congress second & BJP third.

AAP paid price for their bad decision of leaving Delhi assembly. If Kejriwal continued as CM of the state, AAP would have got minimum 40 seats nationwide (preventing BJP to gain majority).

AAP could have played role of kingmaker... Kejriwal's one bad decision changed entire political scene of the nation & BJP benefited by this,
