Mangalore: Sea erosion poses threat to residents at Someshwar Uchil

Mangalore, Jun 10: In spite of the fact that initial monsoon rain was not heavy, sea erosion aggravated at Someshwar Uchil on Monday June 9 morning.

A house near the Arabian Sea collapsed partly, while the house of Chandrashekhar Uchil, member of Someshwar gram panchayat, was partially damaged.

During last monsoon, a number of coconut trees and compound wall of Uchil's house had been washed away by the surging waves. This time, six coconut trees, an electric pole, and the ring fitted to the toilet block of his house have been lost.

Two coconut trees and a large part of compound wall belonging to a private resort have fallen to the might of waves. Water has entered the premises of this resort, posing danger to a luxury cottage there.

The locals are of the opinion that construction of some more break waters in the area, in addition to the one which presently stands at Ullal estuary, might provide lasting solution to the problem of sea erosion.

Loads of boulders stacked at the edge of the sea last year have been swept into the sea, and the residents of Someshwar Uchil hope that lasting solution for this nagging problem would be found before the sea takes over everything they now have.

In the last picture, i see untreated and polluted water being let into the sea. Why action has not been taken against the guilty ? Even in Mukka, 2 private fisheries companies and a seafood export company are letting out polluted water into the sea.

Some portion of Summer Sands beach resort too is affected with sea erosion. But that portion is actually Govt.land which has been encroached and enjoyed for several decades.

dont you think some Problems are self made?we are complaining of waves are destroying house and everything is swept away.but we all know see, water is uncontrollable by manspower but avoidable by building houses near see.second many are digging away the sand to build houses.so water Comes nearer filling like in holes.when there is no sand waves cant be controlled. By earth warming nature has changed .see has become more wild.its taking more land.

Dear people. please do not blame the sea,God and others. Don't you know that Govt has set the protection and distance that you are not supposed to occupy for any purpose? who has asked them to build them right near the beach? who disobeys the law of Nature as well as Govt? Instead of having pity, please educate these people to stay away from sea and buffer boundary which is set for protection! Please do not let Govt waste our tax money on never ending sea problems where people deliberately build houses and they get washed away, then govt helps them to rebuild and history repeats.Do you agree with me ?

Mr. Jossy, you are absolutely correct in your comments. We play with Mother Nature and Mother Nature has its own ways to take revenge and balance things.

Mr.Gonsalves, these are not private lands. These people have encroached on to Govt. land and put up their structures. Hence do they deserve compensation ?

These matters should be discussed and worked on it well before the monsoon starts and erosion occurs every year.
The Officials are asleep all year through only to wake up at the height of monsoon and to tell the public that the problem will be looked into immediately after the monsoons are over!!! and so half a century has passed making people make believe in their assurances....
What a shame. So many people are dislodged, property lost, education affected and many people forcibly put in the clutches of loansharks because of Govt. apathy. (Do not start disputing which Govt. should have done it)
Every year they hold surveys - for what reason if they do not work on them? Just to appease the people on the coast, Govt. dumps a few truck loads of granite stones like the ones you can see in the picture. Are they enough to counter the onslaught of the angry sea? They have never built barriers inside the sea to break the waves so the overflowing waves do not have much force in them and do not damage the coast.

    Is it a new phenomenon?

Life should be a nightmare for the Local people (courageous) who are close to the sea. Government should take some preventive measure to correct this sea corrosion and ensure the safety of locals before it is too late.
