Udupi: Acute coal shortage - UPCL stops; darker days ahead for state?

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 14: Udupi Power Corporation Ltd's (UPCL) thermal power plant functioning at Yellur near Padubidri in the district stopped generating power since Thursday June 12 evening. The power plant had to stop its activities due to acute coal shortage, sources said.

There are reports that present stock of coal at Raichur Thermal Power Plant Station (RTPS) at Raichur, which is the main source of thermal power in the state, as well as Bellary thermal power plant at Kudathini in Bellary6 district have only coal stock enough to generate power for the next six and ten days respectively, it is gathered.

Bellary power plant, which uses up 14,000 tonnes of coal every day, has a stock of 1,40,000 tonnes of coal now, which would be sufficient to work to its full capacity of 1,000 mw of power every day. On the other hands, the units at Raichur require 25,000 tonnes of coal each day, and the level of stock there now stands at 1.5 lac tonnes.

These are ominous signs that the state will plunge into darkness and production and other activities will suffer because of prolonged power layoffs, although there are hopes that hydel power generation will get augmented with the onset of monsoon.

RTPS officials are hopeful that their coal stock will get replenished in time as they expect railway wagons carrying coal to reach the town in time.

What a colossal loss of investment and infrastructure! Was surprised to see the sudden appearance of huge thermal power towers when i saw first time on visit there! On top of this our jananayaks want to have niddodi? Is it only for commission? What abt displaced ppl have they got job/compensation yet?

I don't really understand this news. This plant runs on 100% imported coal from Indonesia and at the moment there is a shortage of domestic coal only. The RTPS (Raichur) and KPCL (Bellary) run on domestic coal. Moreover it is almost impossible to run a plant designed for imported coal to be run on domestic high ash Indian coal.

So I think you need to recheck if the plant has been shut down due to coal shortage or some other reason (Eg: Non-payment of dues, Plant trip, Scheduled Maintenance etc.)

All this is due to BJP/NDA which shouted from roof top and cancelled the coal block allocation. All Hulla & Cry was made for nothing. Excavating coal is expensive and it takes huge investment to extract even 1 tonne of coal. Any investor will invest only if he sees a potential profit and coal blocks will be profitable only after several years/decades of excavation through ROI. Without understanding this all laughed on MAUN Mohan Singh's COAL-GATE and the result is now there for everyone to see.

Since 2 years ago, Power ministry has stopped issuing lincenses for thermal power plant based on it assesment on supply of coal. Call it Coal India's lethargy or depletion of coal reserves, days of cheap power from coal were over long back. Imported coal is 3~4 times expensive than those supplied by Coal India. Morover, international politics meant that India could no longer rely on coal from China (has large reserves). Thanks to our pathetic attitude towards work, coupled with well funded NGOs, we could never make much progress on the Nuclear front despite Indo-US Nuclear accord. Clearly, the symptoms of today (dark days) has roots in the past and were well known to our people in power long long ago. They were busy in scams and did nothing. It would take another 2 years of slogging to have reasonable power generation capacity. By then it is again too little too late because our apetite for power is infinite.

Dinesh Poojary .. read the 4th paragraph of this write-up properly and understand its contents. Don't mention anything for the heck of writing.

The warning macros have already started flashing. The writing is on the wall. Remedial measures I envisage should be taken atleast by the state machinery for the sake of the state ''if the authorities'' are dead serious about its impact. Don't worry, your Karnataka will not plunge into darkness. You are only talking about Udupi Power Corporation Ltd's (UPCL) related to your state. The loss making National Thermal Power Corporation (responsible for generating power to the entire country is still in the doldrums and yet nothing has happened to the country ... surely, there are other back-ups taken by the concerned authorities, so relax. Don't take tension for your district which is like a of water in the ocean. Project yourself towards something greater which will be fruitful and constructive, and not politically-based which will benefit the citizens of India at large.

This is what we don't like about this congress Govt. I am not at playing political blame game here. But Shobha was a better Energy Minister for coordinating with Northern states Chiefs and getting the coals on time. If you can't do this basic thing as a power minister, then we don't need this portfolio or you in Govt.

If you can't keep the existing power plants busy, then why are you mulling over establishment of another plant in Niddodi or any other place? Does that make sense?

Last week I saw sporadic power cuts of about 30 mins - 60 mins everyday through out the week in Bangalore. Just 10 days back I read an article in Economic Times that Industries at Manufacturing Sector are taking steps back to invest in State.

My advice to congress hicommand is that Give FREE HAND to Siddu for next 4 years and stop MLAs going to Delhi and crying on caste/loyalty/seniority/religion basis for ministerial posts. Let Siddu choose his own team and set expectations for everyone. If they don't perform let him sack them. Congress Hi-Command should learn at least few good things from their political rivals, in order to survive.

    All the best..!

Politicians are more intelligent. Remaining 3 years only left now. Unless they try for ministerial birth and grab within this period, I don't think they never get another chance in their life. We are fools to think that this people are 'Samaj Sevak". Congress high command is not learnt anything even after 44 and peep to BJP slowly.

Acche Din in fact ahead when Diesel price completely get rid of subsidies and unfortunately a serious talk will going on in Modi Govta bout the issue. Diesel Price hike would be a serious negative effect on inflation that Essential Good's price would shoot up.I never experienced ACCHE DIN that was better than Earlier Govt in fact,I am shelling out 60 paise/Ltr diesel..APART FROM THAT ONE RAPE MINISTER OF MODI GOVT GOT SUMMONS FROM COURT BUT HE IS STILL IN THE MODI TEAM!!!!!!
