Sullia, Jun 14: An elderly man in a state of drunken stupor allegedly shot dead his daughter-in-law at Subramanya here on Saturday June 14.

Nagappa Gowda (70), has been arrested for shooting dead his daughter-in-law Vidya (30).

It is said that Nagappa had lost his wife several years ago and since then was living with his son Uday and daughter-in-law Vidya. However, as Nagappa used to come drunk every other night and create trouble, Uday decided to move out built his own house next to Nagappa's and lived there with his wife and son.

But the decision to live apart further worsened the situation as Nagappa used to frequently quarrel with his son for building a house in his property. Though the village panchayat tried to settle the issue several times, Nagappa and Uday failed to reach a compromise. It is said that Nagappa used to often threaten Vidya and Uday.

Matters came to a head on Friday when Nagappa reportedly came home drunk and started threatening to kill Vidya. The locals intervened and managed to calm him down. On Saturday morning, Udaya approached the Subramanya police and filed a complaint against his father for threatening his wife.

The police then came to Nagapppa's house to question him, however, before they could reach the house, Nagappa had already escaped and the police failed to find him. They then stuck a notice on the wall asking Nagappa to come to the police station.

On Saturday evening, Nagappa, reportedly inebriated and seething with anger against his son for filing the complaint, came home with an intention to confront him. However, the son was not at home, and he reportedly shot dead his daughter-in-law with a gun that was in his house. Vidya's son who had just returned from school saw his mother collapse on the floor and began screaming. Vidya died on the spot.

The neighbours who were alarmed by the incident informed the police, and soon Nagappa was arrested.

Puttur DySP H B Mendonca, circle inspector Satish B S, and Subramanya SI Ittu Naik arrived at the spot.

Subramanya police are investigating further.

Police as well as district admin should revoke all licensed guns who has a history of drunkards.
Earlier as I know if someone complaints about a threat by a drunk person who has a gun, his licensed gun would be ceased by police immediately and got cancelled his license for ever..

RIP!! Very tragic incident!! May the bereaved come to terms with the tragedy soon!!

Given the circumstances of daily arguments/fights in the house due to property matters, and with alcohol as a bolster such incidents are bound to happen!! May be the accused sr. citizen too had his serious grouse being lonely and having lost his wife, and son having built a house in his property, which matter should have been resolved amicably instead of provoking an already provoked person prone to alcohol abuse!!

Never intimidate or provoke a person who is in a inebriated state, the result will always be counterproductive!!!

"Drinking knowing your limits is ok. But once it becomes habit life becomes tough". This is the timely advise I received from my eldest brother when I was in my 25s. Please never get into this habit. It can make a rich man poor, a nice man criminal in no time. Again I appeal social & charity clubs like Lions, Rotary etc to have a campaign against alcoholism just like they have against smoking. In India it is very relevant.

Today, like any other 3rd Sunday in June is International Father's day. When I read this incident, I really feel very sorry for this Vidya, who had left her parents and everything after marriage. The father-in-law should have been her new father, but alas, what happened is very sorrowful for her near and dear ones. RIP Vidya.

It is very very unfortunate that trigger happy people should take advantage of a helpless woman and shoot her.

Drunkenness is the cause of a lot of crime particularly in villages and unless the authorities control the situation this curse will continue.

Arresting the perpetuater of the crime is not an answer. One should give a thought to control such future acts of cruelty. Perhaps the department of law and order could think of holding counseling sessions in the areas thus weaning out the habits from people.

Why did the police and others take the threat so lightly? Nagappa indeed seek help indirectly before killing his daughter in law by uttering threats. This incident needs to be taken very seriously to prevent any futher happenings of same type.Feel so sorry for the son who witnessed the crime. He needs a lot of emotional support at this time.He has lost his mother and has witnessed her murder. He needs to ge taken real good care at this time.

Ismail Bhai, What about those people who dont drink but kill other innocent people? This is the result of our system. No fear of law and no tolerance in people. This applicable to all citizens. If we blame alcohol for everything then what about so many organized crimes. We need a change.

Without prejudice..., one general observation is that in my opinion this region is the strong hold of hindu cultural outfits. And going by the instances in the recent past it is high time for these outfits to take cognizance of such prevailing aggressive/angry/ferocious/revengefull human behavioural evils with a peacefull/tollerant & tendorly counseling approach to mend the ways of a fellow brotherens through their mighty karyakarthas & swayam sevaks and build a culturally even more strong hindustan.

Ismail..what about those who don't drink alcohol and kill people? Definitely alcohol is bad but don't tell that alcohol is mother of all evil. Your comment shows your narrow mindedness. I have many friends who drink alcohol but harmless compared to those who doesn't drink alcohol.

Bro, if what you have said is true then why so many serious crimes are taking place in countries where there is a strict ban on alcohol???? Who is the evil there, the thoughts in the mind are the real evil, they should be cleansed first!!!!

Alcohol only leads to reduced inhibition wherein a person becomes more prone to do things which he would not do if he were normal, but the seed of the thought (anger) is already there within him, repressed, that seed just comes out when under the influence of alcohol!!

By the above view, I do not advocate intake of alcoholic products in any way, better not take the first drink!!!
