Kundapur, Jun 16: Sea erosion has worsened in Gangolli, putting more than 70 houses in Belikere under Gangolli gram panchayat in grave danger. The sea erosion started a week ago and the sea waves have been lashing inwards during the last three days creating fear among the residents in the area.

The giant waves had been beating the shore much before the onset of monsoons and since Saturday June 14, they increased in intensity. The situation has turned scary as the waves are lashing further inwards.

The locals say that sea erosion has not been so severe in the last 25 years. The waves have been lashing at the houses of Sumitra and Jayanti and the family is unable to sleep in the night out of fear.

The sea is steadily swallowing up a portion of the land. As there are signs of the sea becoming more vigorous and dangerous, there is an atmosphere of fear and anxiety among the residents.

Mahesh Poojary, a resident, said that a permanent breakwater is the only solution and urged the officials concerned to act. Another resident Renuka said that they are scared of monsoons and the waves that rise. "There has been no solution to the problem. There are only promises during elections and no implementation later on," she lamented.

Why government spending millions of rupees for sea erosion every year, this is not the permanent solution. Those who are living besides sea shore let the govt. shift their house to place instead of spending huge millions of rupees for no use.

    An observation:
All the houses under threat of sea erosion are either thatched huts or four walls built up by temporary building blocks none of them are more than a year old. and most of the owners have good houses in safe places where they usually stay.
Every year houses get collapsed, eroded, there will be a visit by ministers and a there will be distribution of compensation money. with a portion of compensation money another temporary shed is built in the same place once monsoons are over, waiting for the next sea erosion.

Why dont authorities restrict people from building sheds at seashore?

    Dear N.M.Mangalore,

Our Corrupt ministers neither sleeps nor ready to solve the poor people's basic problems. Their main intention is how to grab maximum money meant for development & go on Foreign Junket on tax payer's money to enjoy luxurious life in 5-7 star hotels & resorts,in the pretext of study tours.

Few months back I was in visit to Hamburg - Germany. Hmburg is situated on the mouth of River Elbe and Sea. during the high tide (few days during the season) waters enters to roads/street, to avoid that Govt is constructing permanent concrete wall both side of river ( lenght in so many Kms) the project is going to take about 10 years to complete.
We too need something like that permanent solutions for this sea erosion, not temporary solutions like few politicians and Babus in white dress visiting the effected places during monsoon time and media is goving behind them for the coverage and then same statements after statement !!

Few years back some of our politicians ( inclduing then Fisjiers and port minister Vasantha Salian) has visited France to study for this sea erosion. what was thier result ? are they still studying ? if they are failed in thier studeis then please rocver all the cost from them !!

Same old story since so many years, and in the time God knows how much of land has been swallowed by the sea!!

Unless concrete steps are not taken there will be misery for people living nearby in a couple of years!!

So, all those in power should walk their talk with some permanent measure or else there is no hope....

The solution is simple....Large sized concrete Tetra-pods must be installed in coastal areas which are prone to sea erosion.

Unfortunately, most of our semi- literate ministers and outdated bureaucrats have no idea that such solutions do exist.

Negative - For boats to be anchored Quays a.k.a Jetty or wharf's will have to be built.

Its worth investing in these safety measures rather than losing property / Land worth hundreds of crores to sea each year.

    Are our sleepy ministers listening????
