Bangalore: Eight-year-old girl run over by school bus, dies

Bangalore, Jun 19 (DHNS): An eight-year-old girl was killed after her school bus ran over her right in front of her house at Jyothinagar, in Chandra Layout, on Wednesday afternoon.

Namitha, a resident of Thanishka Apartment on 7th cross, 3rd main, Jyothinagar, was a Class II student of Siddaganga Public School, about half a kilometre away from her residence. She was the youngest daughter of Narendra Babu, an architect, and Prameela, a homemaker, said the Byatarayanapura traffic police.

The accident took place at 3:45 pm soon after she alighted from the bus. Namitha’s eldest sister, Tanuja (20), came out to pick her up after she heard the driver blow the horn. When her friends informed Namitha that she had forgotten her bag in the bus, she requested them to throw it out.

When they did so, her lunch box fell out of the bag and rolled close to the rear wheel of the bus. Namitha bent down to collect it. The bus driver, Fairoz, and the bus attendant did not notice Namitha, who was picking up the box from near the real wheel. He applied the reverse gear and moved the bus. Pushed by the bus, Namitha fell down and the wheel rolled over her head.

When Tanuja shouted for help, some neighbours joined her and rushed Namitha to a nearby hospital. She was declared brought dead. The police have arrested Fairoz (26).

In the Unites States and other developed Countries bus drivers are highly respected for their wonderful service to the public - more particularly school children. Before they take the steering, they are provided with thorough training revolving round the safety of the children.

Do bus drivers go this kind of training in India?. An experienced driver always should make sure that the child perfectly safe in the hands of the guardian and only then should resume his journey. Here again it is a case of adequate training and certification before a responsibility entrusted to school bus driver.

I wish all school buses are fitted with speed monitors, reverse camera and sensors and a attendant. They carry children and need to be extra cautious. Bus drivers should be given safety training.

Mr. Vincent, Dont agree. the driver should ask with fellow passengers (In this case children) as to every thing ok and he will move. This is one of the standard to be followed. the problem Indians is that we are still leaving in 15th century. our safety culture has not been improved at all. recent bhilai steel tragedy was another example. i have working with an Australian firm from quite some which gives safety standards a very high importance in work place. they are ready sacrifice a million dollar on a work if the working conditions are not safe enough to work. their motto is people are safe first then the work moves.......you are still in 15th century.

Dear Abdul Salam, Mangalore/Doha we live in civilised world and a part of them are followers of 4th century barbarian who still believe eye for a eye which is failed belief. A eye for a eye makes whole world blind. It's an anti-violence statement. If a person hurts someone - let's say by cutting out their eye - the other person feels justified in hurting them back - by scooping out THEIR eye too. And it will go back and forth until both people are blind.

To put it simply, Gandhi is saying that if someone is violent towards you, you shouldn't respond with violence, because it won't achieve anything and just end up hurting you more.

This is heart breaking news. Safety should be the TOPMOST PRIORITY of schools buses and schools. Children are innocent and cannot anticipate dangers. Drivers have to be taught the rules of safety and be alert at all times especially when they are entrusted with children. In fact every school bus should have a conductor who should be responsible for children getting in and out of the bus and are in a safe place before the bus moves. Very very tragic and most irresponsible bus driver. My heart goes out to the family.

one way to avoid future accidents is by placing the bus attendant outside the bus when the kids move out and seeing that the coast is clear and then drive on. what a loss for the parents, may they have the courage to brave it all.

Heart breaking by reading such news early hours of the day.... maintaining road safety is the urgent need of the hour by all concerned authorities as well as by the people. Also such accidents to be investigated and dealt with strict penalties and punishments.
