Three die as two Mumbai buildings collapse


Mumbai, July 12 (IANS): Three people were killed and six injured in two separate incidents of building collapse here Saturday, officials said.

Two pavement dwellers were killed and another injured when a portion of a building fell on them while they were sleeping in Jai Bhim Nagar, an official with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster control cell said.

The incident took place shortly after midnight, the official said, adding that the wall of the building was weakened by the ongoing heavy rain.

The victims were identified as Dayashankar Mishra (60) and Rudramani Upadhyaya (45). Tribhuvannath Upadhyaya, 58, who sustained injuries, was rushed to a hospital.

In another incident, a teenager was killed and five people were injured when a tenement which was being repaired came crashing down in a slum here.

The incident took place in Colaba's Ganesh Murti Nagar area at around 10.30 a.m., the BMC official said, adding the victim was identified as Mashroof Shaikh, 18.

Since Friday, there have been at least nine incidents of various structures or walls collapsing across the city.

Mumbai, Thane and Konkan region have been lashed by heavy rain in the past three days with a forecast of more rain over the weekend.
