Mangalore: Love for cow expressed in form of baby shower at Pandeshwar temple

Mangalore, Jul 15: A tradition commonly practiced in India among the Hindu folk was observed here in the city on Monday July 14, but with a difference. The Mahalingeshwara temple authority of Pandeshwar offered a baby shower (Bayake) to a two-year-old cow Lakshimi inside the temple.

The baby shower was offered to the cow, which has conceived a calf by Nandi (male), as a mark of gratitude and respect for the milk they get from the cow for use in the anointment of temple idols during puja.

The cow was clad with saree and was beautified with gold ornaments. The cow was brought before the idol of the temple, outside the sanctum sanctorum, for the performance of baby shower.

Jeevan Kumar, administrator of the temple speaking to daijiworld on the new practice in DK said, "It is the duty of the human being to respect the cow. The temple started to rear the cow when it was in need of milk to offer it to god. Even after five years of cattle raring we had not found the best way to exhibit out love, gratitude and respect for the cow.

"Finally, the temple authority, on learning of the idea from an outsider, decided to offer baby shower to the cow which conceived recently. On this auspicious day, we served food to as many as 3,000 people. The temple also received sweets and vegetables from devotees in a show of solidarity with this new cultural initiative," he said.

As though India lacks people in whom to see God! How is that one is able to see God in a cow but not in the poor struggling to live with dignity at his/her doorstep? and this is our glorious civilisation!

Shashi Shethre Fantastically written the truch behind the worship of living things which god has created in this world. Every living things has full rights to live in this world. Worshipping in any form is not to be condemned or preached about it. It is the matter of choice till it is forced on to . Here nobody is forcing anybody to worship. There are people who respects each other religion and there are people who only like to see the negative part of our religion. They forget their forefathers are part of it which now changed due to narrow mind set.

What difference did this ceremony make to the cow? Instead of giving her the food she likes, she is being fed with fried items. Let us treat animals with respect and not force them to do what we want.

I respect your views completely and have no questions on your belief. But, I believe in worshipping the creator through his creation. My respect to Henry ford is because of the car he created, my respect to Mr. Eddison is due to the blub. Through car and bulb I can see both and thank them for the same. It is a very simple logic for me to live a short life. There are many interpretation about the creator and place he lives. But, for my small intelligence I can see the creator in his creation. But respecting, adoring, worshipping his creation and seeing him through it I feel he hears my prayer. For a man like me who thinks life is only for this second and next second is gift of god.. my belief is paramount. I am afraid no one should have any problem with it. I may baby shower a cow or feed the cow on my dinning room is left to my choice. I am also happy no priest of my religion can dare to issue any fatwa on me. I am what I am and I can live a life of my choice as long as I don't hurt any human being, rob anyone, respect the nature and all it's living and non living things.

We are seeing god in his creation. we are respecting and rewarding his creation as it isuseful for us. we really do not know what we must do to thank that little cow which gives us milk , which gives us manure. we are trying all that is possible to thank that, little creature of god. I am sure it is far more better than, killing someone to become a matyr to go and join the unseen god. There is a big difference between seeing god in his creation and seeking god himself. when I say in the stone lives the god, tree is the abode of god, in the man lives the god, in the vehicle in whihc I travel lives god, the vehicle of fellow human being travelling on the road lives the god because, god is omini potent and he can reside anywhere in his creation I am a worshiping every moment of mylife. I dont need any fixed time, fixed place to worship. Rituals are part of life it is like I wash my fathers feet, I feed my little child, I take care of my mother. It is symbolic to show my gratitude to the creator. The belief which we follow is what it says is God is everywhere and in every cretion of his and it is our Karma which makes our destiny. This belief of mine have given great satisfaction for me, given me an indentity and humbleness. our ancestors have lived like this for ages and we have protected our environment until the invaders and pirates came and robbed us. the self belief of ours is so strong and every person following it is very contended. This is why Indians have never invaded any country, eventhough we had caste system we never had a inter caste riots, we had never killed one another in the name of caste (even though we might have discriminated each other), every caste can go to each other temple and pray without a question. Does it not show that, it is much better for us to be what we are and we are better than others. we do not have fear of any religion will absorb us?? on the contrary we absorb every kind of relion in to our fold.

Not few, there are many people who loves animals,I'm also one of them but i cant claim animals are better creation than human. Jesse's comment above mentioned 'humans of this generation'!!
We all are present generation. It's includes you too. do u agree with it??!! there may lot of inhuman people out there doing bad things. but it seems Jesse accusing entire generation.
About balance in nature, People who consume meat doesn't eat all the animals as it make such a 'Imbalance in nature'. Consumable animals are enough consuming around the world and it should be consumed. so that nature will be balanced. Meat consuming not started after Independence,it's since thousands of years. Yet it's available in these days. And in 'School' i learned India is one of the largest Meat exporting country in Asia.
(Beef exports up 44% in 4 years, India is top seller - source TOI)

To know the creator one should search him within creation first. Every thing comes from nothing and goes back to nothing. Nothing is creator and creation. Learn Veda and don't simply believe in holy book. Believe means no effort from your side , depend on others. Believe and non believe both are in same boat, both don't know. Take method and tool and experience it.

I wish you should have taken home and taken care of him. You must have looked after him untill he was healed and then rehabitated him. Nice to advise everyone.. everyone does their bit like giving alms everyday. How is this person with broken limbs have connection with people's faith on an animal. for many of us cow is like our second mother... the motherless child grows up only with cows milk as far as India is concerned. why should anyone question this faith. Luckly my faith has space to accept my rituals as long as it is not harming anyone. we do not have anyone issuing circulars an direct us to follow the instruction. we can do within the reasonable aspect of humanity to follow any kind of rituals which can give us solace, better felling and spiritual elevation. Being humble, paying gratitude to the nature and it's being , seeing god in everyting.. incluing the soil we stand is basic essence of our faith. with this we had lived 1000s of years.. my faith have lived ecology for ages with our beleif. I wish any of my friends who do not accept my beleif have any right to critize it. finally, what we pay to the temple is quite accounted and used by the govt. ulike others.

I don't read anywhere in the article that, people ill treated any human when baby showering the poor cow. I can see everyone happy in the pictures depicted in the article. Moreover, they fed the cow very well. Animals are part of creation and this nature. You cannot discriminate animal from humans. I have seen when a cattle shed caught fire people entering the flaming shed to rescue the chained animals. There are examples of these farmers who loved their cattles as much as their own family giving life for them. These are extreme selflessness and sacrifice. We have scriptures glorifying these yomen act. It's impossible for a materialistic people like us who love our mobile phone and car more than our fellow being to understand. My question was why would you bring your service into this episode. There might be people in the crowd of this unique rituals who might have done more services to the humanity than you have done. They might not be advertising it but, still been part of this holy service in their (my) view. I can understand it does not mean anything to you..but it is revered by someone and you can respect it and we will not lose anything. I was advised my one senior person of great wisdom to respect other religion like a friends mother. You may not love or adore your friends mother but you respect her. If we expect our mother to be respected we must respect others mother. If we use bad language on friends mother then we can expect a reciprocal. That means our deed and words is what gets back to us. I hope you understand what I meant. I have great respect for Christianity, Islam, Jainism, Buddhism and all the religion of this universe but, I love my religion the most.

    U explained well.
Can any one show their old cows still looked after by the so called cow lovers in their own homes, which have stopped giving milk?
And then let them talk about cows as holy and should not be used as beef. One does not sell holy cow...
or let it roam around wildly or kept in Govt. asylum.
In my opinion it should be kept and looked after well by the owners until it's natural death.

So many cows are just left to feed themselves beyond their places of owners property boundaries. These cows eat anything they find - for instance, banana leaves which were used for dining by all and sundry..
You guessed what I meant by "Used by all and sundry"? Is it okay if their cows eat those leaves with left overs used by "all & sundry".....!!!?

I also want to see the owners of cows taking them for a check up by the veterinarian (taking care of their dear cows) regularly so that the milk we drink is good for human consumption (there is every chance cows getting various diseases from eating away from their regular places.)
It all boils down to one thing: those who profess love for cows and venerate them, do they really take due care of this holy animal?

It is often misinterpreted as an exploitative social system for retaining economic and social status of certain vested interests of the ruling class".

While all good things are welcome, people also watch out for vested interests. Don't become ullu easily. It has taken years to roll out the caste system, let us not get back into it 'head-on'.

I hope they don't think it is same as 'mane mane aata, maduve aata' etc, that we played in the childhood.

It would be nice to rear cows in as many households and give it rejuvenation. In Mangalore, even in the villages, one out of 20 houses, there is a cow. But for the press, we come forward with our love for the cow and our shining 32.

Do you serve food any of those who are struggling with hunger on street. you feed your family so much right. ever you paused for a while and felt like serving those a meal. I am sure you have not. if yes, well and good. but many of those comment all these, will not. So, let's not comment on each and everythign with negative responses. It's a time to show society as well as our next generation as how holy the cow is treated. Also just celebrate a similar day like our Bayake for cow, just with a gratitude, love and affection. So, just cheer up and respect than start commenting unnecessary comments. Hunger people on street doesn't mean you stopped eating ... come on...

If we scrutinize our daily expenditure, there are so many things which are criminal waste.

Cows eat chakkuli and chips. Even it they do not eat, it is distributed as prasadam.

They have 8-9 cows-calves in their hut.

I warned them about the cow thefts and to be careful.

The lady of the house asked how the thieves can be so cruel to cows.

I told her, it is beyond our imagination.

I hope all beef eaters change their habit after seeing these photos and reading this news item.

Those same people who rear cows as a God in their homes, and to give milk, eventually sell them when they are old and unproductive, to muslim dealers for PROFIT, and they end up as beef mince / beef sukka on our plates...or, as leather shoes / sandals that you wear. If you don't want anyone to butcher cows and to treat them as Gods, kindly tell people not to sell them to dealers, because that becomes very hypocritical. Keep them in the cow shed till they are old, until they die a natural death and then bury them in your own compounds. Can you all do that?

    Mr. Nishar,
Mind your language there are few people in this world who love animals, unlike you,and if it is mentioned in books that animals are meant for humans, that doesn't mean, it is for eating it like you have not seen for years. It is meant to have balance in nature if you have gone to school then you must have learnt it.

    Mr. Well Wisher,

Why are you eating fish, chicken, goat, etc. They are also there for balancing nature. Arent they? Also living being most of all. Why people eat it.

And if you have gone to school may be you should have studied that even plants and trees have life. They too are balancing nature. Right? Why are you eating vegetables and fruits.

Do one thing. Let all these living beings survive ,Keep all of these to balance the nature and you eat dry grass and leaves. Ok??!!
