Mangalore: Traffic police crack down on honking - Take action against buses

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MD)

Mangalore, Jul 16: Cracking down on vehicles, especially buses that use high decibel horns indiscriminately, the city traffic police on Wednesday July 17 intercepted over 40 buses near Lalbagh and fined more than 26 of them.

The cops stopped the buses, both private and KSRTC, and inspected them on the spot. Horns of several buses were removed and placed under the bus tyres so that they would not be used again.

Each bus found to be using horns with frequency above 75 decibels were fined Rs 100.

The police inspected the frequency of the horn sounds using a sound level meter.

Speaking to daijiworld, ACP (traffic) Uday Nayak said that the sound level meter has a capacity to catch frquencies up to 10 metres, and that it was obtained from the Pollution Control Board. The device was imported at a cost of Rs one lac, he said.

Apart from buses, one auto rickshaw was also caught using the horn indiscriminately. A two-wheeler rider was fined for riding on the wrong side.

Traffic policemen H Shivaprasad, H Babu and Pradeep H S were part of the operation. After Lalbagh, the team continued the exercise in other parts of the city including Nantoor.

I suggest that the RTO recommends just one kind of horn to buses, auto-rickshaws, & two-wheelers according to the required decibel. It should also be sold by an RTO authorized dealer with the horns having the seal of the RTO/Traffic Police compulsorily. Any other kind of horns used should be banned & fined heavily (Rs. 5,ooo/-).

Conductors should not be allowed to use whistles, but should use a bell connected to a string, just as in Mumbai & Chennai buses. I am SURE this will solve the noise (whistling) nuisance in buses of Mangalore.

I HOPE THE RTO ALONG WITH THE TRAFFIC POLICE WILL COMBINE & LOOK INTO THIS SUGGESTION ON BEHALF OF MANGALOREANS.

Good job by mangalore traffic police.. finally something is working out in mangalore... But Rs.100 is too less for fine... it has to be increased. Hats off to the Traffic Police, This problem has been goin on since ages. Inspite of the one way they keep honking and keep speeding as if its a racing track. The fine should definitely be increased. This problem has been goin on since ages. Inspite of the one way they keep honking and keep speeding as if its a racing track. The Urwastore to kottara route also needs to be checked for rash driving, incessant honking, overtaking for no reason, jamming breaks frequently causing standee passengers to fall over each other and moving too closely to the vehicles ahead.

Horns make noise and disturb peace, but the air pollution injures public health and silently kills people.
Our option is to implement change for solutions or face the problems (willfully / reluctantly).

I am pleased that the cops are on the job of curbing vehicle horn noise. But, fining all uniformly at the laughable rate of Rs 100 is ridiculous. The punishment should correspond to the gravity of the offence and the sound level meter used by the cops imported at the cost of Rs. on lakh apiece is not suitable for the job.
In a recent article in Daijiworld I had argued for a horn noise meter to be installed in all vehicles and bill bus owners according to the accumulated meter reading on a slab basis as in income tax, after giving an initial allowance for genuine horn blaring for safety reasons.
We need to develop a compact noise recording meter, installed in the bus, so that bus owners pay for the cumulative noise their buses produce and are mad to pay periodically as electric or telephone bills.
The engineering students from Tulu Nadu colleges have been coming up with very good practical inventions. They should be encouraged to develop cumulative noise control meters and, thus, bring name, fame and gratitude from the nation for their contribution to vehicle noise control.

It's a good move by the RTO and Police, but the penalty should have been stiffer. It should have been Rs 5000 or at lest Rs 1000. Another annoying and dangerous problem faced by many drivers at night is that many vehicles (both cars, busses & trucks) drive with their high beam light at night. By doing so, the vehicles on the other side of the road are blinded with the high beam of the other vehicle, and this can be the cause of accidents. I think the RTO and police should start a check and fine them at least Rs 500. Then it will be a pleasure to drive at night. I avoid driving at night because of the high beam nuisance. RTO and police, please look into implementing a law saying they cannot drive with high beams on city roads.

A round of Applause to the officials. Really appreciated. But one sad part is fine of 100 Rs. What's the hell. These buggers may feel f%%% off right. I can really think of their response..."noodu rupayiya... aathe pondu". When you really penalize them penalize with a huge penalty as they should be scared to repeat the same mistake. This 100 rupees fine will be forgotten so fast , especially by these stupid people. So, I would have appreciated if the culprits were penalised strongly. Any ways good drive by RTO. Many many more such rapid actions can be under taken...especially here at Mangalore... condition...if the officials wish.

I highly compliment Mr. Uday Nayahk and his team of police force for apprehending erring drivers for using the horns.

In this context it is very irritating experience for one when he is unable to proceed because of the traffic in front and then the bus drivers use the electric horns indiscriminately for the fun of it. It would be a good idea for The Police department to Mangalore City as a silent zone.

Whole heartily welcome the step by the RTO,traffic police to crack down on indiscriminate honking.Which is very much nuisance, disturbance and irritating.Indiscriminate honking has become fashion, habit for most of the drivers of the vehicles.Besides continuous blowing of whistle by the bus conductors create a nuisance and our ears will get deaf because of honking at high decibel and continuous blowing of whistle. In fact those things are unwarranted and can be used only on emergency.
But one thing is certain this action is only for a day or two. This has to continued and strict action to be taken against drivers who honks the horns indiscriminately and the conductors who blows the whistle continuously without any meaning.Hats of to traffic police. Punish the errant, reckless drivers and conductors.

What about cars parked on footpaths mostly at K.S.Rao road? The police are least bothered and not concerned about the pedestrians.
