Bangalore: First in country - Bike ambulances to serve needy in congested places

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Aug 2: State health and family welfare minister, U T Khadar, informed that Karnataka, for the first time in the country, will be pressing into service 'Bike Ambulances' to serve the patients and accident victims stuck in congested areas or roads having heavy traffic. He said that this novel initiative, being undertaken by Karnataka ahead of other states, will begin moving around the city roads in November this year.

Speaking to journalists at Vikasa Soudha here on Friday August 1, Khadar said that preparations are afoot to ensure that these ambulances begin serving the people from November onwards. These motor bikes will be equipped with first aid kits, oxygen cylinders, and a driver who is trained in caring for the injured persons, he explained.

'In the first phase, these ambulances will serve Bangaloreans. In the later stage, the service will be extended to other city corporation limits in phases, like Mysore, Mangalore, etc. He explained that these bike ambulances will cost about two lacs apiece, and the department has decided to acquire 100 such vehicles. Out of them, 20 motor bikes will exclusively serve this city, he added.

'As soon as the control room gets information about any accident, information about the traffic situation on that route will be analyzed through GPS If the traffic is heavy or if it is found that it is out of reach for 108 vehicles, bike ambulances will be dispatched. Once first aid is provided, and if the injured person is in a condition that he can undertake motor bike travel, he would be taken to the nearest hospital. Otherwise, he would be shifted to the hospital through either 108 ambulance of other vehicle,' he explained. He added that being the pioneer of this scheme, Karnataka wants to keep everything in place, after having discussions with experts and health department experts, before pressing the scheme into service.

'We have already written to the home and urban development departments to earmark separate lanes for the movement of 108 ambulances in main roads in the city towards ensuring that patients reach the hospitals at the shortest period, which will go a long way in saving lives,' he said. The minister also said that the government is also planning to use helicopters for serving the needy in emergency cases. 'This service will also begin from this city. As helipads are not available in all the hospitals, we are discussing the practicability of providing helipads to them at the government's expense, after holding discussions with private firms,' he explained.

He also stated that Karnataka is also planning to begin hlicopter ambulances in the state, beginning from Bangalore.

Mr. Khadar, while I appreciate the new innovative idea of "bike ambulance", I only hope that this is not just for publicity and that this project really works. Good luck!

This service is provided by Paramedic.. The paramedic is a healthcare professional who works in emergency medical situations. unfortunately India still lacks this specialty.... u can see this kind of services in every country...

The idea is good so Long it functions. The helper should be also a good Driver as well a good medical asst.as we know in India something new is introduced, then it gets sick ,either no diesel, bike is in repair,or someone has taken it for a ride, such things should not arise.otherwise a good Thing. They should be kept well ,and fit ,not someone steals.we cant compare Gulf felicities in Mangalore like helis,Here there are no place to land leave alone for traffic, high buildings etc,.Our infra structure is still in Baby Phase.

WE NEED AIR AMBULANCE - IF THERE IS NO SHORTAGE ROAD AMBULANCE.

If the person has a back/neck injury ,any unnecessary movement could risk paralysis. It is important to support the victim's head and make sure they don't move it. CONSIDER EVERY ACCIDENT A HEAD INJURY, CONSIDER EVERY ACCIDENT A CERVICAL/BACK INJURY! This is important even if they feel they can move their head normally!
Can motorcycle ambulance really save lives in road accidents? I don't think so. Perhaps, they could be better used in minor kitchen accidents.Better spend tax payers money in educating the public on right of way for emergency vehicles.

    Very good idea.

this service is in operation in Germany a pioneer country in offering services of Paramedics and Doctors at accident and emergency sites.

Particularly used during summer holiday periods where highways get congested and traffic stops after or because of accidents and even helicopters cant reach some sites like mountains or tunnels.

we also used to include baby food in the motorbike as after traffic jams there were incidences where babies used to starve in trapped conditions.

Mr Khader introduce these services not only in cities but from ed points along highways or also rural areas which are difficult to reach like during rainy season because of floods etc.

    all the best.

Something better than nothing ,as for the present time and condition its a PERFECT solution should be done fast many lives could be saved ,I think it would be good if they initiate a Emergency Response medical specialist personnel for this job ,pay them decently we then get good candidates, also station them in every area /nursing home so they can respond fast.

There are so many laws in this country, how much do people follow?

Anyways, in an emergency if the accident victim gets first aid on time, then his life can be saved. In that direction, this is the right step. Passers by can't help only a qualified paramedic can.

using helicopters is one of the good ideas which is already in use in gulf country. this is very useful in heavy traffic and long distance travel for hospitals.in gulf they use roundabouts instead of helipad in case of emergencies for landing.

I would like to suggest Minister to impart First Aid training to public as much as possible.A first aid trained expert should be available for every KM on highways 24x7 .Once the control room gets a call, they should be deputed.

Bike rider himself should be very smart to conduct preliminary treatment to an injured person at the spot. It's not an easy task to recruit & train them in such a manner to rescue person from critical stage. Instead of doing it so, like ATM system, Govt may better plan for initiating mini rescue centers all over the state with a skilled physician cum nurses to render first aid treatment in certain distance of kms.

    Good job Mr. Khadar!

To all critics - These Bike Ambulances exist in most developed nations including middle east and have proven to be very effective in congested areas and places with narrow roads.

Their main objective is to provide immediate basic medical attention before the patient can be shifted to an ambulance or hospital for further treatment.

SOMETHING UNUSUAL HERE !!! FIRST WE HAVE TO CONCENTRATE THE INFRASTRUCTURES RATHER THAN OVER AMBITIOUS i.e. Just inspect the GOVT HOSPITALS WHICH ARE BEYOND SOMEONES IMAGINATIONS ( PATHETIC CONDITION AND POORLY MAINTAINED). AGREED THAT YOU BRING THE PATIENT TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE THERE IS PROPER FACILITIES - DOCTOR - NURSES THEN ?

please dont comment looking only at the headline, read the article first.the purpose of this bike ambulance is to provide first aid to victims stuck in traffic where a regular ambulance will take time to reach and where possible to shift to hospital,if shifting is not possible at least they can give first aid till the regular ambulance arrives to shift to hospital.

Sounds good but in practical any injured person who broken bone cannot be travel in bike due to the way he will be sitting in bike will just worsen he condition .The reason is we getting this stuppied idea is because The health minster doesn't have medical background.
Instead of this there should be a law that if someone help a accident person in road will automatically get points which will be counted at the end of year and get a reward . u can see the people helping each other. show in TV add how you can help people .instead of letting the people die.
