PM to dedicate Nagpur power plant to nation Thursday


Nagpur (Maharashtra), Aug 20 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Mouda Super Thermal Power Project-Phase I in the district to the nation during his brief visit here Thursday, an official said Wednesday.

The 1000 MW (2x500 MW) power plant, set up with an investment of Rs.5,459 crore, will supply power to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, Daman and Diu besides Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The Phase II of the project -- being implemented by the National Thermal Power Corporation with an investment of Rs.7,920 crore -- will make Mouda Super Thermal Power Project its (NTPC's) biggest in the state.

On completion of both phases, it will have a capacity of generating 2,320 MW, with the second phase accounting for 1,320 MW.

In the first phase, the first 500 MW unit of Mouda commenced production in March 2013 and the second followed suit in March this year.

Besides Mouda, the NTPC is also planning to commence commercial operations of the Solapur power plant with a capacity of 1,320 MW in the current 13th Plan Period.

The NTPC supplies a total of around 4,135 MW power to Maharashtra through its various power stations, including the 1,967 MW Ratnagiri Gas Power Plant, formerly known as the Dabhol Power Company built by Enron, GE and Bechtel.

Later in the evening, Modi will lay the foundation stone of the proposed Nagpur Metro, the Pardi Grid Metro, Separator and new flyover on National Highway 6 in Nagpur.

He will be accompanied by Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, union ministers Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport and Highways) and Piyush Goyal (Minister of State for Power-Independent Charge) among others.
