Pakistan political crisis: Lawyers on a day's strike

Islamabad, Aug 21 (IANS): Two lawyers' organisations observed a country-wide strike Thursday to support democracy and ensure supremacy of the constitution.

The move comes amidst a political imbroglio following the incessant demand of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) for the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose government, they say, is in office due to a rigged 2013 general election.

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) observed a complete strike Thursday across the country in support of democracy, the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution, Geo TV reported.

The decision was taken during a joint executive body meeting of PBC and SCBA here Wednesday.

It was stressed in the meeting that all political parties should make serious efforts and all possible practical endeavours to resolve the present political crisis in the larger national interest and for the integrity of the country without compromising constitutional and legal norms.
