New technique : Fraudsters cheat bank account holder in minutes

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RJP)

Mangalore, Oct 21: On Monday October 20, a customer of a nationalized bank lost nearly Rs 25,000 after trusting a caller and revealing personal identification number (PIN) to a person who projected himself as a bank official. The person who was at the receiving end of this fraud has been identified as Shashi living at Kumpala near Thokkottu here.

Shashi said in a complaint filed in the city (north) police station at Bunder here that a person who conversed with him in Hindi on Monday morning, posing as an officer of Corporation Bank, sought the PIN of his account. The caller reportedly told him that Shashi's account had lapsed, and hence new number is being allotted to revive the account. For this to happen, he wanted to know the previous PIN. Although Shashi tried to explain that his account is properly run and active, the caller said he was calling from the ATM department of Corporation Bank, and reiterated his demand to know the PIN, after which Shashi revealed the information sought.

Shortly, Shashi got SMS which stated that a sum of Rs 2020 had been debited to his account. Shashi immediately left home to visit the bank. By the time he reached the bank, almost the entire balance in his account had been wiped out in the form of transfer of Rs 24,595 by nine different NEFT transactions, each for different amounts.

In the meantime, the police have warned the customers of banks not to reveal details of their bank accounts to anyone. This warning is issued in the light of large number of complaints received from bank customers, they said. They have urged the bank customers to bear in mind that bank officials never seek bank account details, PIN etc over phone.

Since the stock markets are booming a new breed of 'fraudsters' have surfaced they get the data list of tele nos. of those actively trading/investing in markets and send mass SMSs recommending to buy XYZ stock, whose price would already had been pumped up by 'circular trading' giving sky high targets in few days!! Many have already lots lacs of rupees by buying such rogue stocks with the greed of making fast bucks!!

The stock price is maintained for 2-3 days after the messages are dispatched and then the downfall starts, nonstop lower circuits even from 500 to 10 of even lower giving absolutely no chance to exit due to lack of buyers!!

Almost every other day a new SMS is send giving rosy projections etc.!!

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS PRANK BY BUYING EVEN A SINGLE STOCK OR YOU WILL BE STRIPPED OF YOUR INVESTMENTS BONE DRY!!! Jai Hind!!

I am a customer of corporation bank and use internet banking. To transfer money using net banking the following is imp:

    1) Just by getting the pin one cannot enter the internet banking portal. How did the fraudsters get the account USERNAME, PASSWORD and "AUTHORIZATION PASSWORD"

    1) one must add a beneficiary for which "AUTHORIZATION PASSWORD" is required and then a ONE TIME PASSWORD is sent to the registered mobile no of the account.

    2) Even during money transfer "AUTHORIZATION PASSWORD" is required and then a ONE TIME PASSWORD is sent to the registered mobile no of the account.

    3) When i first received my internet banking details I was trying to add the account nos of my family members as beneficiaries and was not able to add above 5 accounts. However, i was able to add it the next day.

Something is definitely suspicious and it needs to be investigated thoroughly.

This is absolutely false. Beneficiary can be added immediately. But it has to be activated OTP has to be keyed in which will come to the email ID or mobile. adding 9 beneficiary is something impossible without the help of the individual mobile or email ID. and when you do neft, you need to put otp before completing the transaction. So the whole story looks hoax

This is not true story. Only with PIN it is not possible to add beneficiary and transfer by NEFT before 24 hrs. Somebody needs the account no. as well as user-name and password for net banking and adding beneficiary.
Every one should be aware that the duplicate debit cards can be made if you do not concentrate on the card given for swiping at shops or restaurants. They simply put your card on floor and without your notice they will get all the details of your card by advanced machines by just swiping. you must keep your eyes on your card while swiping.

These cheats always speak in Hindi or Broken English.
Some times they claim to be from Insurance company and say that Bonus amount of our Policy is to be credited to our account and hence account details are required. So, people should never talk to any one about their Insurance policy as well as Bank accounts over Phone especially if the caller speaks in Hindi and most of the time they call to the land line as the Mobile registers the callers' phone number.
The main question is how a Cheat got the personal phone number of the Account holder of Corporation Bank unless someone from inside the Bank divulged the same to the tricksters ?

This modus operandi is the latest used by fraudsters to con mostly the uneducated and sr. citizens!!

Nowadays, if news reports are to be believed in many places insiders themselves are involved in such acts!! How come, otherwise, these fraudsters get the registered phone nos. and other personal details to take the account holder into confidence??

The most startling recent case reported in TOI (Mumbai edition) was that of a nationalized bank in Mumbai suburbs sr. officer handing over the entire set of keys (11) from the main door to the inside locker to a robber, and he emptied almost 55 lacs of cash! He was caught, and on further interrogation, he is said to have done the same thing earlier with connivance of top officials of few other banks in other areas and pocketed crores of rupees!!

All Bank has to implement OTP system to customers mobile number before adding & activating Beneficiary. This could prevent such fraud.

Not possible to do an NEFT without adding a beneficiary and the procedure for completing adding of beneficiary takes about 24 hours. Not sure how 9 beneficiaries were added and at the same moment transactions were made, case explained by the person does not look legit.

@Arjun,mangalore,this typ of operandi Modus is not only in India but even in Europe active.it is called Nigeria Connection. They are so professionals ,get a number of a account not necessary to know of account ,or Person ,and add some 2o or 10rupees .suppose they get a positive reaction, then starts the real Operation.they can get the number by their own method.by the ATM:they can Keep a camera which sends the number and Details to another Sender outside .and through this they can copy the Card. Here too many People are fooled so.One more method of fooling is ,when one gives the number at ATM and the Money Comes out,or Card Comes out, some Person speaks to you ,attract your atteention ,so that you are distracted, and second Person at the side takeout the Card or Money and disappear,.you have hardly time to react.or think Money is not yet come. Here too People ask account number or pin on Telefone saying they are from bank. This is everywhere.NEVER give Information on Telefone about account or pin.even to bank employees.

@Rita : with a PIN number an NEFT translation cannot be done, you need to login to your bank account via NETBANKING only then you can to add a beneficiary which again as i mentioned takes 24hours to add one, and corpbank has also introduced OTP (one time pin) which will be needed to authorize an NEFT. What you are mentioning is something different than this case.

@ Kusuma, fraudsters are in some professions like medical practitioners also. Patient believes that the doctor is God for him, but this doctor makes his patient to undergo unnecessary tests and diagnosis and makes money. As per me this is also called a fraud.

Some time ago I was literally shocked to see a physician doc seeing patients in the emergency room (hall) where 6/8 patients were lying on separate beds and he going and checking each one randomly being helped in the process by aiding staff and then coming to his table and prescribing medicines, pocketing 300 bucks per patient!! In between there are so many people coming to him for various queries etc.!! The chances of making diagnostic errors and thereby prescribing wrong medicines in such a 'chaotic' set up is very very high, but who bothers!!!
