Verstappen confirms he’s staying with Red Bull for 2026 season

Budapest, Jul 31: Ending months of speculation, four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has confirmed he will stay with Red Bull Racing next season. Speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Thursday in Budapest, Verstappen put to rest rumours of a potential team switch.

"Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But for me, it's always been quite clear — also for next year,” Verstappen said. “I'm already discussing plans with the team, the changes we want for next year, so that means I’m staying.”

Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028. However, recent whispers in the paddock suggested there may be performance-related clauses that could allow an early exit. These rumours intensified after Mercedes driver George Russell hinted that his team might be in talks with Verstappen. The speculation was further fuelled when Verstappen and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff were reportedly seen with their yachts anchored off Sardinia at the same time.

“If my boat is next to Toto's, then it’s next to Toto's,” Verstappen remarked, brushing off the gossip. “You can have a personal relationship with someone even if you don't have a working relationship.”

His announcement comes just weeks after Red Bull replaced long-time team principal Christian Horner with Laurent Mekies, raising further doubts about Verstappen’s future with the team.

Verstappen, who is set to mark his 200th career race for Red Bull on Sunday, previously reaffirmed his commitment to the team last season amid talks of a Mercedes offer following Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari.

Fans can now look forward to another season of Verstappen in Red Bull colours as he continues to chase F1 history.
