Bangalore: Doctors withdraw resignations, end strike

Bangalore, Oct 29 (IANS): About 2,600 government doctors, including specialists, across Karnataka Wednesday agreed to withdraw their resignation letters and call off their protest following assurances by the state government that their demands will be fulfilled soon.

"As the chief minister (Siddaramaiah) assured us to fulfill most of our demands, we have directed our members to withdraw their resignations and call off the strike," Karnataka State Government Medical Officers' Association president T.A. Veerabhadraiah told reporters here.

Advising the agitated doctors to resolve their problems through talks and avoid extreme means to seek their demands, the chief minister told the association's representatives that delay in disbursal of salaries through local bodies would be rectified soon.

"We will also consider their (doctors') demand for enhancing the salaries after studying the models adopted in other states," Health Minister U.T. Khader told reporters after the two-hour meeting between the chief minister and the association.

Regretting the inconvenience caused to thousands of patients across the state since Monday when doctors and nurses working in state-run hospitals resorted to strike, Veerabhadraiah said the association would give the government reasonable time to implement the assurances the chief minister gave them.

"We have agreed to call off the three-day strike unconditionally after the chief minister sought some time to implement the assurances," Veerabhadraiah said.

Among the 14 demands, the government agreed to appoint new doctors through the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), pay salaries in the first week of every month, promote resident doctors as surgeons and regularise service of doctors working on contract basis.

"We will do our best to fill up as many vacancies as possible, keeping in view the budgetary constraints this fiscal (2014-15)," Khader added.

I have a sincere request to you Mr. Kader. Can you please come to your constituency and see this condition here? This is related to health of the people here. Patients and Doctors cannot travel to the hospitals in your own place. I know couple of ladies who were pregnant but stopped going to work because of the road condition here, especially from Thokkotu to Deralakatte. There are 3 hospitals there Yenepoya, KS hegde and Father mullers and multiple schools and colleges. Children going to school have to stand and inhale dust because the roads have so much potholes and dust and they are prone to asthma at a very young age. Ambulances carrying patients get stuck in traffic during peak hour because the road is so narrow. You have been saying for the past 3 years that you will repair and widen that stretch, but every time blame it on the rain or something else.

Also, there would be some saying he is health minister and not road minister. Well, this is impacting the health of people here and he has to address it as health minister and just because he is health minister he cannot ignore everything else. Also, the road minister is in his own government with whom he can talk to and get this fixed so that patients and doctors can reach hospitals and children don't suffer with backpain and asthma after travelling in that potholed roads. And easy access to health is also duty of health minister. For this he has to work with other ministers in his government to get it done. Please don't give false promises and really do some work if you really care for people.

Khader Bhai your Govt doesn’t have budget to appoint more Doctors whereas they have enough budget to fulfill election promises by way of freebies correct? Stop pleasing any particular community for vote bank instead start creating job opportunity for them so that they will not become lazier and others will not feel that these people fed with their tax money
