Mangalore, Nov 2: In massive efforts of cleanliness drive, Dr Aloysius Paul D’ Souza, Bishop of Mangalore inaugurated a campaign named as Nanna Kasa-Nanna Javabdhari (My waste-My responsibility) putting the wrapper of a sweet into his cassock pocket after he ate the sweet, on Saturday November 1 at Father Muller circle in Mangalore.

The audience and volunteers descended to the place and emulated the Bishop. They also put the wrappers into their pockets to convey a message that they were also part of the cleanliness drive.

The campaign that was kicked off at Father Muller circle was observed in as many as 114 places in the diocese simultaneously.

It should be noted that around 350 students of Father Muller’s college participated in cleaning drive, with picking wastes strewn from Muller circle to Morgan gate.

On the occasion, Mayor Mangalore Mahabala Marla read out the oath to the gathering, in which the participants vowed to take responsibility of the waste.

Marla in his address praised the citizens of Mangalore for showing special concern on waste management. He announced that due to continuous efforts by concerned people, Mangalore city ranked at six among cleanest cities in Karnataka.

“I request the people of Mangalore to join hands with the ongoing cleanliness campaign across the nation. One day out city should be declared as cleanest city in the country." Marla said.

Ivan D’Souza, MLC on the occasion said “The district of Dakshina Kannada is hundred percent literate. The contributions of the Diocese of Mangalore are significant in making the district hundred percent literate. Now the Diocese has come forward to contribute its service in keeping the city clean. I thank the Bishop for taking such a noble gesture.”

Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza said that one should take responsibility in managing the waste generated by one self. He recalled the dictum ‘cleanliness is next to godliness’ and called on participants and citizens to participate in the cleaning mission.

“If the citizens join hands with the government in keeping surrounding clean, then only we can realize the dream of clean India,” the Bishop reiterated.

The bishop said that 114 parishes of the diocese have taken up cleanliness drive in their respective places.

The organizers of the programme distributed cleanliness pledge sheets to the participants which will be circulated among their friends. The process will go on till January 26, 2015. On the occasion of the Republic Day, a lot will be taken and the winners will be announced. Winners among the people who have signed the cleanliness pledge will get attractive prizes.

A street play conveying the message on the need of keeping the surroundings clean was staged by Valencia Parishioners.

    Good commitment. appreciated !!.
First and foremost, MNC must introduce waste cycling plant in Mangalore.
Second awareness to segregate the waste
Third everyone to comply with waste segregation and cleanliness
Otherwise the waste put in bin goes to municipality bin and then to Vamanjoor pile. The wind and rain takes again back to the city.

    Good move

This should be encouraged in every SMALL COMMUNITY MEETING as we find that neighbours are throwing their rubbish into other people's compounds, late at night or when not there. Very bad.

Hence every ward should check on this and stop people from throwing garbage around.

People always used to blame the Govt., these days are forced to take a broom and clean, or throw waste in proper place. This is one thing, in which Modi is proved really effective.

Actually Chetan Bhagath in yesterday's TOI editorial said that besides keeping our houses clean, we should also take the initiative to clean a 10 metre radius outside of our compound wall regularly. Makes sense!

Every cities, towns should have adequate and effective waste management systems, such as waste water treatment plants, solid waste recycling system. Treated water can be used for irrigation purpose or can be let into river/canal by maintaining the quality of water to not to harm marine life flora fauna and animals. Solid wastes from treated plants and other hard wastes should be used to generate electricity. Even soft wastes can be converted into manure. If authorities, govt's politicians takes stock of interest on this major environment degradable issue we can avoid places like Vamanjoor dump yard. It will lead live citizens healthy life. Ample of technologies for managing waste are available in the market. One should need to have a big heart to spend money on this issue.

Actually this is a good follow-up initiative by the Bishop to PM's call for "Swatch Bharath"
I and we, truly take up PM's call on it and try to keep our surroundings clean by collecting garbage around us and segregating the same.
    Then what happens:
Modi, the PM, also should make sure that the concerned authorities lift\clear the garbage, every day and transports it to the designated areas for dumping.
Like in Bangalore if the BBMP run by the BJP is not at all concerned over the years to clear the garbage, then it becomes a big mess all around. People will lose interest as they are in a fix to find place to deposit the waste in a public place as the normal BBMP truck has stopped collecting waste from Building door steps.
When such situation arises, people who were trying their best to keep places clean will lose interest and the "Swatch Bharath" programme will not be carried out by citizens due to the apathy of authorities concerned.
Important PM sends stern directives to all State Governments and its machinery involved in keeping environment clean with stern action against the authorities failing to do so.
Point made: Authorities should be taken to task\punished, then only situations will improve in every department.
