Mangaluru, Nov 4: MLA J R Lobo has said that the NRIs he spoke to in Kuwait have agreed in principle to invest in Mangaluru airport runway extension project.

Lobo was speaking in a press meet in Mangaluru which was his first after his recent visit to Kuwait. As per reports, NRIs were interesed on extending the runway at Mangalore Airport,

"In last meet with Union minister G M Siddeshwara, we had discussed about the 280 meters extension of runway with a cost of 1100 crores. Union minister had said that Union government had no sufficient fund instead the runway could be developed with public private participation (PPP) like they did in Cochin." he said.

"When this was discussed with NRIs in Kuwait during my recent visit, few NRIs said that they are ready to invest in this project. Some even pledged to the extent of Rs. 50 crores. If the run-way is extended, wide bodied aircrafts can land in Mangaluru airport which will fuel further development in Mangaluru. Hence this issue will be brought to notice of state government first and then it will be taken to Union minister for the approval. The work can be done with financial support from 50-50% both state and union government." Lobo added.

He also promised that he would press Karnataka government to grant CETpermission for NRI students of Karnataka.

Lobo also said that work of embankments wall to stop flood water from Phalguni river and Nethravathi river in Mangaluru constituency under the Minor irrigation project has already started in 16 places with an outlay of Rs.3.40 crore and the work will be completed in three months.

Lobo in the same press meet revealed that the flood management project proposal for Nethravathi river is under consideration and later it will be sent to Union government. This project will done with equal finance grant from state and union governments. This projects costs Rs 150 crores.

Most of our PEOPLE / NRIs opine / suggest to build a new AIRPORT with more than 10000 feet runway in some other PLAIN LAND in and around MANGALORE.

Most of our people suggest that spending more money on the current TABLE TOP AIRPORT in Mangalore is not advisable.

Therefore it is better that the State Government and the Aviation Ministry of India look for plain vast land in and around Mangalore for building the NEW AIRPORT in Mangalore.

Govt. can use all the illegally recovered money from Karnataka Ministry. Both during the past and present rule a lot of money has been recovered from Lokayukt dept. Use this money to develop the state, rather than ending up in some other minister pocket.
This kind of request from Mr. Lobo can happen only in Mangalore. If the same kind of development has to happen in other Airports like Dehra Dun or any north Indian states, money is readily available. Why ther is a different mindset between Northa And south India, inspite of heavy weight Ministers are sitting in Parliament. Or are these Karnataka ministers watch blue films while Assembly session is going On?

280 meters extension of runway with a cost of 1100 crores.....

Why do they need 1100 crore rupees to expand just 280 meters of run way. That is equivalent to Rs 3.9 crore per meter. Are they going use melted gold instead of concrete. ?
    Absolutely non-sense.

@krishna For example, if the design EMAS bed length is 350 and the runway is 150 feet wide, then the maximum feasible RSA (runway safety area) improvement cost is about
$15,000,000. If the runway is 200 feet wide then the maximum feasible RSA
    improvement cost is $15,000,000 x 1.33 or $20,000,000. or about 1100 crores

Present Airport is not fit to deliver domestic service.. then how can v expect International standard..? IS There enough space to make Runway..? Is there enough space to make road to the Airport..? Now done is done.. is there proper place for arrival passenger pick up..? Y can't they keep arrival counter in basement..? Den departure vehicles can b moved straight away after ping instead of 'U' turn and coming back and blocking the inward vehicles.

    1. The old airport was the best one the tackle such problem instead of spending unnecessary fund to construct new airport the old airport itself developed again done is done.
    2. When they constructed new airport they would have done it in Sea side.. good for safety as well they would have got more FLAT area to have 10,000 mtr of runway..! Also it would have been easy approachable to Udupi and mangalore District even to bhatkal and kasargod.. the best Place was THANNIRBHAVI..!
    3. I have been followed up the cargo airport activity.. officers are sitting there and having fun because there are no activities. I was very much interested to develop cargo airport by my own cost..! But Politics doesn't allowed me.. now present person is not interested to develop the cargo terminal. Readers I request you if u have contacts wit any top authority pls let me know.. I will make Mangalore Cargo airport role model..! Because mangalore has Sea port and airport both and the cargo movement can be handled very well.. wit present flight capacity we can develop the present airport well.. should have proper person for all that.. anyways this is my opinion.. cricts are taken in a positive way..

Please leave the beaches alone. A lot of the natural beauty of Mangalore has already been spoilt in the name of development.
And a runway parallel to the beach coast is a horrible idea anyway, due to crosswinds.

The current airport is not great, but it's good enough. Most of the aircraft that land here are either B737's or A320's, and the runway is sufficiently long for them.

777's and A330's can actually be accommodated with very little runway extension, but I don't see the point. There simply isn't that much passenger traffic at IXE, to require wide-bodied aircraft.

I've now started flying into IXE once every 3 months, and it's perfectly fine by me. Infact, I like the fact that it's a small airport, because I don't have to go searching around for gates/terminals like in BOM, DEL or BAH airports.

The current main runway length is about 8,038 feet. For extending it by 280 meters or about 940 feet would bring it to 8962 feet. This length is not sufficient to allow safe landing of fully loaded larger aircraft such as Boeing 777 or 747 on a hill top runway. For that much money, they should have extended the main runway by at least 2000 feet. If vacant, reasonably flat government land of about 600 acres available within a distance of about 20 km north of Mangalore, for about Rs. 1,200 crore a new swanky airport with a 10,000 feet runway can be built which will also greatly help Udupi district passengers. The current airport can be given to IAF and Indian Coast Guard.

I normally travel once in 45 days to mangalore either from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. I have noticed except during peak seasons flights are 50 -60% full with 60% passengers from neighboring Kerala. If kannur airport gets ready where is the load for flights to Mangalore ? No body would like to fly with 25% load for 8 months in a year ... Then where is the question of requirement of wide body flights ?

Mangalore is one of Karnataka's only two Airports and Central Govt has no funds for its development. Neighbor State Kerala has already three Intl. Airports and the Govt has money to construct two more airports which are in progress now. This amounts to discrimination. What our leaders are doing?

why was this location chosen in the first place? now to extend there needs to be extensive work perhaps filling land to accommodate the extended runway..this will still be one of the dangerous airports with little room for error while landing or takeoff!! each time I land there I start praying (one of the few times I remember GOD) why wasn't a location chosen keeping in mind the demands of the future...daal may kuch kala hai!

I think Mr. Nalin Kumar Kateel should learn to help NRI's who are big support to Indian economy! He should speak to central aviation minister and control day light robbery of Mangalore bound passengers by Air India Express ticket pricing! Let it be same as Kerala destinations proportionate to distance!
Dear DC, MLA, MP's please try to improve roads to airport and try to end the chaos of vehicular movement at the arrival and departure area!! Try to implement some standard rule and one directional movement! Allocate some decent and sizable area for passengers to get in and out of their vehicle!!

This is Good News to Mangalore. If Mr. J.R.Lobo persuades this matter with NRI Forum of Kuwait, Central and State Govt, Airport Authority of India, things can move. I am sure Mr. M.R. Vasudeva previous Airport Director would be a Great Resource person to assist the Concerned Authorities on this. Our present Airport Director is equally dynamic and things will move faster.
Let Mangalore airport have better facilities that can attract airlines who can operate wide bodied Air Crafts. So we will have better connections to more destinations. This can boast city's Economy and Tourism too.

RUNWAY Extension at MANGALORE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT is a top urgent requirement to land WIDE BODIED AIRCRAFTS.

At present from some of the GCC sectors BOEING aircrafts cannot carry the full load to Mangalore airport along with the fuel. They can carry only a 70% of the load which is a disadvantage to presently operating Airline as well is a disadvantage to the Mangalore sector passengers.

PPP (Public Private participation) in the development of the subject runway is a good idea like cochin airport. There are so many well known businessmen from Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and other Indian states in GCC countries and in other countries who would take probably take part in the investment if Karnataka State Govt. and Aviation Ministry of India take interest in this RUNWAY EXPANSION PROJECT at Mangalore International Airport.

Let us hope for the best.

Before going for expansion of the runway we need to see the traffic and current aircraft landing there. Air India making us to travel in Budget airlines with old flights and with high fare, let normalcy come first like Cochin and Bangalore regarding aircraft, schedule and fare, then we can go forward with accommodating more people and extending runway.

Public Private participation is the best idea. Cochin is the best e.g since many years they even distributing dividends to the share holders.
