Mangaluru: Man sets himself ablaze at Bejai, dies

Mangaluru, Nov 9: A man allegedly commited suicide by setting himself ablaze near SBI Bank, Bejai here, reportedly due to financial crisis.

It is learnt that Alwyn Praveen D'Souza (39) took the extreme step as he could not repay the money he had borrowed from various people due to loss in business.

Alwyn was into tanker business. It is said that he was deeply depressed as he used to get calls from lenders who demanded their money back.

Unable to face the crisis, he allegedly set himself ablaze by pouring petrol on Saturday November 8. He was admitted to the AJ Hospital with severe burns. His condition was very critical and as the he had suffered 90 percent burns on his body. He breathed his last on Sunday November 9.

He leaves behind his wife Susan D'Souza and two children.

A case has been registered in Urwa police station.

    Very sad, may the soul RIP. the law must help the people who cant repay the loan, if the person cant pay full amount once a time, then he can pay by little by little by installment and without interest only the capital amount. or any charity organization must help the person providing without interest money so that he or she can pay and get out of the financial crisis.

    Before this tragic action, definitely Alwyn might have started seeking help and support from his near and dear ones. When nothing could worked out, then he has taken this extreme step.

    No doubt, taking loan from private party is as dangerous like self destruction. But when during the time of crisis, if Alwayn would have got some support & encouragement, he would have saved his life.

    Incidents like this call for Strong Bankruptcy laws in India. It looks like people like Vijay Mallya can owe money in crores and still have a sweet life and the local entrepreneur suffers. However this does not justify Suicide. Hope the family finds the strength to overcome this loss.

    Very sad news indeed.
    People should not take loans without having the capacity to pay it in say 1 or 2 years. His capacity should be the definte income source.
    If this condition is not met the person is sure to fall into death trap and all money doubling hopes are just hopes.
    The exorbitant interest rates makes people gullible to invest and aid the never ending whirlpool of debtors leading to death trap.
    People wake up..

    i am sorry to get the news. however, committing suicide is not the solution. one has to face the situation. i also urge people not to borrow fund in case you are not able to return it. interest free loan is available from some kind hearted groups. may God bless all of us and keep us away from all types of burden in our life. let us help the needy people to come out of their bad condition. instead of wasting our money in show business in marriage and other occasions, let us do it simple and at the same time let us help our brother/sister who are in need of financial help.

    Doc, the naked truth is one has to be ready to face the consequences of his own actions, there is no escape especially if the loan is taken from 'loan sharks'!! And there is no escape from them if the amount size is big, they will smoke you out from any hole you have hidden in, so going underground is not a solution at all!!

    It is a well known fact that once you take a big loan from the loan sharks, no business in this world will be able to serve even a part of the interest part of it, so you are now in their 'clutches' forever!! Reiterate, since these chaps profession is earning money on loan, they are extremely ruthless and will push you against the wall with various methods they are adept at till you give the money back to them!!

    Incidentally, Mangluru off late, has seen a spate of such incidents, so it would be very wise on anybody's part, not even for any other emergency, take loans from loan sharks, it is much better to sell off some extra family silver and assets and manage the situation than fall into a trap created by a wrong decision!!

    Mr.Rudolf..Good Comment..Doctor's view is good but it is quite dangerous from borrower's family point of view..Doctor said in earlier comment..,you run away from the place and hide somewhere,do small business...Doctorrr..If he runs away from that place,lenders will harass his wife and children..They don't hesitate to torture her..She can't say that he ran away..They don't believe..in that case they will make her to file a missing case in police station..!! And don't expect borrower to run away from the place with his family..!

    Extremely sorry about the death of Mr. Alwyn. All because of illegal financiers who charge exorbitant interest which becomes double than the principle amount borrowed by one year and multiplies. Borrowers are unable to pay and takes extreme step like this. Government should take severe action against such financiers who threatens the borrowers with goondas for recovery of loans.

    For any one who want to start any business, unless it is continuing your parental business, I would say, please be aware.
    Business is not a life of happiness. It never gives happiness, unless you are doing social service with very negligible profit and scrupulous manner.
    Moreover, business might give you an ego to boast about, pleasure at the cost of others.
    It will never bring happiness, and most of all it will give you 24 hours of emotional tension, which will give way to ill health, on the longer.
    Are you going to continue on the business in your afterlife???

    RIP. My advice is never ever get into private debt. If you want to do a business follow the proper channel, take experts advice, obtain bank loan if you need. Never take loan from private lenders. Loans from pvt lenders sure to put you in deep shit. Do not hurry to expand your business. Do it methodically and progressively with your own earnings. If you are doing it right and meeting your repayment commitments regularly, banks will help you further for expansion etc. But say big no to pvt money lenders please. Readers, if you have taken any money from pvt people please plan today only to repay them full at the earliest even if it means selling some of your belongings right away. Come out from their clutches pl.

    Bro, banks also are not much less with treating a loan defaulter, especially some foreign and recently opened pvt. banks, who sometimes offer loan without security, they have their own group of recovery agents who are professionally trained and very notorious akin to bouncers, they too can push a defaulter against the wall if you do not repay the loan back!! Only when the loan is taken by pledging some asset then the bank will go the legal way and take charge of the assets!!! In which case too, if you have pledged your own house, they will not show any mercy, but take possession of the same after getting court orders, so the end result is the same when defaulting with huge loans!! Only who know the tricks of the trade and the legal loopholes on how to defraud a financial institution without falling into trouble take full advantage of the banking loan system even when in default!!

    Dear Mr. Rudolf, when I said private people includes Private banks. My comment is based on assumption that the loan taker has genuine intention to repay. I am not talking about will full defaulters who are expert in defaulting and defrauding. I have also taken at times bank loans and banks have followed up at times too. But if one is doing a business or profession with hard work and dedication without indulging in lavish spending at least until he settles down, bank loan should be the only option to raise funds when needed. What happens with pvt money lenders is even when you are doing a good business, even when you genuinely want to repay their accumulating exorbitant charges make you a defaulter unwillingly. There comes the problem. End of the day if you decide not to raise finance from any source including banks it is "the best" option. Keep it up. My suggestion is only to those who want to raise finance for their business or other needs.

    Being a doctor how you can advice someone to ‘run away from home’ if he has done this, then the person who gave money would have committed suicide dear doctor. You are advising the loan takers to take loan and run away. Now a days trust among people has left only a few percentage and if loan takers follow your advice it may go to negative dear doctor. Instead doctor I am not being a doctor advice the loan taking people “if you are taking loan make sure the way how you can repay, if you don’t now the way to repay then don’t take it, instead of business go to any job get some salary and leave happy life my advice is don’t cheat anyone, all of our GOD will never forgive us” that is for sure doctor.

    Antony, I agree with your comments and as you said, taking loans from 'professional loan sharks' should be the very last resort for any person for any purpose whatsover!! I do not know much about Mangluru, but there are well organized groups of 'loan sharks' in Mumbai who charge from Rs. 5 to even Rs. 10 per 100 p.a. depending on the type of person availing the loan, and they will be satisfied only if you go on paying the interest but once the interest payment is stopped, they will hound you like hell, they are just ruthless and daring and they have the wherewithal and guts to enter the loan defaulters house and forcibly take away things and do much worse things to get back their money!! In a situation, if the default is very high, even immediate family members and close friends also cannot bail you out, then what other choice does a man have? Either as one learned doc suggested the defaulter should go underground or ?????

    God help many such people who have fallen into the clutches of these dangerous 'loan sharks'!!!

    I too disagree with Dr.Kamath's advise to borowers that if business fail,'run away from home'....I didn t expected a suggestion from person like Dr.kamath.It is utter rubbish.If the borrower runs away then the person wholent the loan has to take suicide.Instead Dr.could have suggested ....1.Always take loan from PSU banks/privaye banks who are more transferent in dealings and understand the borrower well unlike private lenders.2)try to avoid borrowings from private lenders who charge exhorbitant interest which eat the vitals of borrowers earnings thus pushing him to loss.3)Have control on borrowings to match well with earnings/repayment capacity.4)At times when the business showing signs of loss and future is uncertain about line of activity change the line/diversyfy which best suits to you.his is shoulkd be done with lenders/banks concurrence.
    Running away from home makes anybody not trustworhty and effects life through out.

    For the information of those who are in Debt .Please note the following points
    In business if you have lost your money and not able to pay back the loan just run away from the home ,change your mobile no .As per law your freedom for Life is more important than Loans .Those who have given Loans cannot file case for not paying their money back.At the same time try to earn money by doing some jobs ,Make a living out of it and then slowly start the business ,this time carefully and then if you are able to make good profit then call all those lenders and pay back their money .They have to wave off the interest this time .Please dont comit suicide .And for the information of Lenders here please dont put too much pressure on others just for your money

    Why people do any business, without profit, recovery and beyond their capacity to manage?
