Mangaluru, Nov 15: 150 years old trees, cut down illegally were seized by the forest department led by the Mangaluru zone forest officer Clifford Lobo and team on Saturday November 15 at police lane, off Old Kent Road, Pandeshwar, Mangaluru.

The 150 years old trees were situated in the government owned land. The said land was allotted for the construction of houses including for the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Mangaluru. The Karnataka Police Housing Board had given the construction work to the contractor. The contractor without asking the permission from the forest department cut down two to three trees (exact number not known as the trees are cut) dumped under the pile of mud. The locals informed the forest department about the illegal work.

Trees cut being transported illegally

Immediately the forest department raided the area and handed over the bulldozer operator to the Pandeshwar police station and has filed a case against the contractor Clifford D'Souza and issued a notice to the Karnataka Police Housing Board.

Speaking to the media, Mangaluru zone forest officer Clifford Lobo said "They have cut down 150 years old trees without the permission of forest department. There are total seven trees remaining here. A case has been filed against the contractor Clifford D'Souza and we have the reasons to believe that some illegal business was going on as the cut trees were kept hidden."

It is learnt that the remaining wooden sticks have been dispatched to Hoige Bazar depot.

This is all tamasha for some thing gone sour between the respective parties!! Hacking of trees is going on a large scale without anybody raising an eyelid!! One has to just take the trouble of going a little interior even up to Bantwal area and see how many huge tracts of forested area has been cleared by the land mafia to level the same and convert into plots for sale!! In this some very old, medicinal, and rare trees are also hacked mercilessly!! Any no. of complaints to the concerned forest office or other authorities does not yield any results whatsover due to obvious reasons!!! This is the state of affairs!!! Jai Hind!!!

there is something wrong is going on, First of all the land is given to constuction work for Karnataka police force. how they construct the houses without cutting the trees. While giving the land they should give the permision for cutting the trees. If they required trees, they should give some othere land. or he should put the govt otherisation NO. on the tree. So no one should touch it. All this is fool the people. there are maney mills in D.K which are which are doing bussness with Illigal trees with the help of forest officers.
May be in this tree they didn't get commision.

    Mr. Pinto,
The GCC people love their countries and they are not after money and are clever people so they have transformed desert into green land here all the concerned officials are money minded and they don't have the capacity to understand the importance of trees so so they will desertify our beautiful evergreen forests just for money

I do not understand why JCB operator was arrested and not the Contractor Clifford D'Souza. Operator was doing the work authorized by Contractor.
Police Housing Board Head should be jailed. He was protector of Law and Order and He is also the wood thief. Now what happened to Forest Minister Rai. May be He is sleeping while trees were cut.

To preserve existing trees in the town a awareness campaign must be launched by forest dept. and sponsored by local private companies.

Those trees were of the Previous to last century!
But as usual, no one was paying attention to the same. They were here before anyone of us/the Internet/ both world wars/ Fight for India's Independence started.
Before cutting these trees atleast he could have checked with forestry officials or maybe both are involved for Profit.?

Chop off the hands of this ruthless contractor. What he has done is unpardonable! He has demonstrated in full measure his selfish nature. This needs to be condemned by everyone who cares for mother nature.
