Udupi, Nov 19: Chaos prevailed at Sharada Residential School, Kunjibettu here on Wednesday November 19 after parents staged a protest over the disappearance of a girl from the school.

Eshika Shetty (13), a student of 8th standard reportedly went missing from the school's hostel premises on the evening of Saturday November 15. She has remained untraceable so far.

Eshika is the daughter of Shekar and Yashoda Shetty from Yellinje, Mulky. Her parents are residing in Muscat, while she has been in Sharada Residential School for the past two years.

Speaking to media persons, principal of the school Vidyavanta Acharya said that on November 15 there was a basketball match from 6 pm to 8 pm, and around 600 students including Eshika had come to watch. "A little while into the match, Eshika complained of headache and left for her hostel room, and passed through the lecturers' passage. A teacher stopped her on the way and asked where she was going, and Eshika replied that she had headache and was going to rest in her room. The teacher then went on her way while Eshika went towards her room," said the principal.

After the match, at around 8.15 pm, the students came to the dining hall and were given their cell phones to call home and speak to their parents. When the teachers went to her room to give her cell phone to call back home, they realized that she was missing, and a search was launched, Acharya said.

However, even after a thorough search of the premises, Eshika was nowhere to be found, and at around 10.45 pm, the school officials approached the police and filed a missing complaint.

The police who came to investigate found her diary, and from its contents, it is reportedly surmised that she was interested in films, music and dance, and aspired to become an actress, sources said.

On November 16 the search continued and her footwear and clothes, a red t-shirt and a white skirt, were found near the compound wall between the school and its hostel. It is suspected that she might have changed her clothes before going missing.

The parents on learning about her disappearance came down from Muscat and lodged a complaint with the Mulky police.

On Wednesday, around 50-60 people including Eshika's parents, family members and parents of other children came to the school and demanded swift action from the school authorities. They alleged that the school management had acted late and had failed in its responsibility. They also demanded that the watchman resign or be fired for dereliction of duty.

Speaking to reporters, Eshika's parents said that she was a courageous girl who had helped in catching a thief in the hostel premises two years ago.

Udupi town police have registered a case and further investigations are on.

Hi, I am an ex-student of sharada and I actually just live 5minutes away from the school in Manipal and I have been to the school recently and I really don't think it is right to blame the institution or the principal and teachers! according to the recent reports the 13 year old girl clearly had personal problems which most likely triggered her running away and not the institution! the principal and teachers are the best you can ever find and there has not been a single day where I haven't felt safe being in sharada in my 5 years of schooling there. Hope for her safe return. sharadan forever!

Acc. To me the school is not to be blamed.Im an ex-student here. Everyone face home sickness at first. But we moved along with the others but this is undoubtly a senseless act in running away for some FILM ACTOR.But I understand a girl of that age cant think matured enough and ussualy end up doing foolish things, but seriously this is heights of foolishness. Understand people how big or however strict the system might be there is possibility of loop hole. But according to me this was first time such a foolish act took place since 2 decades that was when this school started which shows how efficient the system was but sometimes minutest mistakes create big problems, which is the reason why I wouldn't suggest blaming the institution completely when there might be some sort of serious mental illness or personel problem with this child which might have caused such miss happenings by her.

Hi everyone. I'm an alumni of this school. All I can say is that the school takes care of everyone's safety and are strict in their approach. I just hope and pray that she's safe and she comes back home. And probably she should be taken to a counsellor if she's scared to talk to others about it. The school cannot be blamed for the entire issue. Instead we should try and search for her. The principal is a good man and the children are in safe hands. Until they don't take drastic steps on their own. Shardan forever.

Life is never a bed of roses. one must have the courage to face it bravely, no matter how tougher the journey gets.I am an ex-student of this esteemed institution. My five years of stay in this school has been nothing but a memorable journey! I wont be exaggerating if I compare it with a paradise. All the efforts the school has put has always been for the betterment of the students! So please do not blame the institution and their faculties. Its necessary to highlight the good points of this school, so that people think twice before falsely accusing it of anything! The fault of one student shouldn't become a reason to question the novelty of the school that has brightened the life of 1000's of kids and made them a responsible citizen of this country!!!
    A Proud Sharadan Forever!

SRS can never leave it's ethics it has got the best principal best teacher and best students when it is an institution this all happen pray that she comes back safely and shez fine that's all it's waste blaming the school. One who studies in Srs can only know the value of it. Principal sir has reported that she had said she had head ache she had informed and when it's basket ball Match I know how it is at Srs because our batch represented nations from same school. So please don't give an chance for public to make it an issue which don't deserve to be . Even now am proud to say am part of sardhan....

There is no chance that anyone can just enter the school premises without the knowledge of the Security Guard. If that was the case, then by now so many such incidents would have occurred right.

Being an ex student of SRS, I don't think the institution should be blamed. We have also gone through difficulties, but we never decided to run away like this. It's the best school and i have always felt safe here. Our teachers never taught us how to run away from problems. In fact they taught us how to fight it. I pray and hope that the girl returns back safely but it is not the fault of the institution. They have always made sure that we are safe and sound whether it's in the school premises or when we go out for an excursion/outing. Just because a 13 year old decided to run away, you cannot judge the institution because of her. That would be completely wrong. I trust my school and there's nothing that can break that trust. I was a sharadan and forever i will remain one.

Very sad to go through different comments from different people in a different angles. Here Girl, parents, school authorities, police department all are pictured in this short documentary. It is quite obvious but nobody knows the real fact, why, where and how it has happened?Only proper investigation will reveal the truth. But I feel sorry for the parents and the girl.Whatever may be the fact,I pray girl should be safe without falling into the wrong hands and abused.Agony, pain and mental trauma only parents can understand. We the public may air our views/opinions in different angles.I once again pray Almighty to give enough strength, energy and wisdom to the all the concerned departments, authorities and general public to trace this girl and handover to her parents safely. But don't politicize or diplomize this issue at any cost.Extend your possible help,co-operation to trace this girl without any prejudice.

I feel there is no fault from the management or school Part. The girl is smart enough to escape may be than no one can stop. I really feel pity for parents.

I cant understand why school had to keep match from 06 to 08 at evening/night. The teacher has gone to give a mobile phone to the student to call her family... it means what duties are being done by the teacher. Going down to the level of serving the students..and children do not even realize how parents sacrifice for their own good.
As she in the article she is courageous and strong. hence she has planned her own move.. we can not blame teachers/management/police and parents.

Sad for the parents to hear their teenaged Girl went missing. It Looks like she planned in advance to slip off on games day, well knowing People will be hardly there to watch.May be someone just flossed in her ears that he/she will make her a Filmstar and abducted or helped to slipoff the hostel.Noone can help when someone wants to cheat People and go.Parents should have thought of it when a Girl Comes to puberty, she Needs parents guiding Hands.Only a hostel will not fulfil a teenaged Girl/Boy or Money their Sentiments .They Long for love and safety .now too late.Lets all pray that Girl is not lost in underworld and come to realize that her parents are more worried about her and Returns soon and continue her studies to make a solid future.Dear Eshika ,please dont do come back ,and continue your studies.parents are more worried about you.Noone will be angry for your elope from hostel.Be a brave Girl .dont believe on strangers promises .only your parents can give you a safety home and love.you can become film star after your studies.be a good Girl. All the best.Tell where you are.

Please do not to argue, comment or blame each other instead let's all pray for her safe return. This is 100% fault of the girl, not the school management and they might not aware how she might have escaped. Parents should guide the child always what is good and bad nowadays. Nothing is safe in this world. Safety and security is in our hands.

a 13 year old girl is missing. not kidnapped . Positive here. she is very close to her hostel. looks like she want her parents to know that money is not everything but they need parents love and affection.this is a learning lesson for all of us that we are responsible for our children. not society or hostel or school.
it is very hard for parents to go this way but i feel this is the best way that we control our children ourselves and don't expect others to look after our kids . I hope this little girl will come back from wherever she is hiding to become a film star.

During our childhood we could see the same actors and actresses on tv in different programs and serials. Very rarely now and then we could see new faces. But now a days it is reverse. With so many channels and with so many programs (ethical, non ethical inclusive) too every time we see only new faces. Some times I wonder from where they are getting so many new entrants all the time. I am sure many of them come against the will of parents and join acting tv/film industry with a dream to become stars unaware of their destiny. The industry has become big like a ocean and these stars are small fishes. No one knows after acting in one or two serials what they are going to do rest of their life! May be some get into modeling field! But modesty?!

At least upto 12th standard, children should be along with parents.Parents can monitor their children's activities better than residential school. At least children have attachment and love towards parents if they stay together. Once they are matured enough, they get thinking and judging ability of what is right/wrong !

We cannot simply blame on hostel management and so on.
No doubt it is too much for the parents to bear the agony when their budding daughter goes missing.
If you join sequence of events, it gives rise to assume that the incident was pre-planned. Let police act promptly and trace Eshika’s whereabouts. Hope that she is safe somewhere.
Few days back we came across some incident involving two girls fooling their parents with wrong information and keeping them in the dark of actual situation.

Tomorrow,if your family member leaves home on their own wish..then Are you and your family responsible ? Don't compare jail with residential school..In jail criminals are kept,in residential school, future generation of the country are accomadated..here,article doesn't point finger towards school (to the best of my knowledge)..They(school) must be having watchman, but if you want to escape from his eyes, sure you can..but if someone wants to kidnap you, then it is not so easy to escape from watchman's eyes..

Note: School is held resposible,if authorities don't keep watchman/guard..

Firstly I wish and Pray that Yashika returns home or school safe.
It is not right to blame school administration while other students are safe n only she is missing on her own. She went off to her room and from there she has left without informing any body. If a child is not interested in studying in a stream line that she is forced to do she must have been suffocated forcibly to be there to study something. We are not sure what this girl has been going through.

I think, government should make it mandatory to have CCTV cameras at all important locations within the school premises (including residential schools) and every year, there should be a safety inspection done by the state education department. CCTVs are a valuable tool, not expensive to install and can help not only Police, but also provides evidence in the court.

I am not sure about the actual fact. But looks school authorities can not be held responsible for this. Your child ( might be ) left hostel purposely and how school authorities will be able to stop her. If it's kidnap or forcible pickup from the campus , then yes, school authorities has to answer. But here friends were safe and only she is missing. She only preferred to be back along with the reason of headache. So, depends on the real fact of her missing whether school authorities to be held responsible or not. First and primary responsibility is on the parents for residing in foreign country leaving their daughter in other's mercy. That's it.
