Mangaluru: Amidst bystanders and police, hit-and-run accident victim lies helpless

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Nov 20: In a tragic incident that took place at Kadri Kambala road here on Thursday November 20, an accident victim lay waiting for help for over half an hour, despite the presence of locals and the police at the spot.

The accident was a case of hit-and-run. It is said that an auto rickshaw in a bid to overtake hit the person who was riding a two-wheeler. The rider lost control and fell off the road, while the rickshaw driver sped away.

The rider, whose identity is not yet known, was badly injured on his right leg.

Though he was unable to move and kept calling for help, no one came to his rescue at first. The accident only came to light when a passer-by saw him lying helpless in a ditch. Soon, locals gathered at the spot and the police were also informed.

Though some of the people offered to help, the police who arrived in around 10 minutes reportedly forbade the locals to touch or help the accident victim, saying that he had broken his right leg and hence it would not be feasible to take him to hospital by private means of transport or auto rickshaw. They also said that the ambulance service was informed and it would be there shortly.

Meanwhile, the injured man continued to call for help and waiting for the ambulance. Incidentally, the spot is just a few hundred metres away from a hospital. Some of the locals expressed concerns that if this was the response to an accident in the city limits, the case may perhaps be worse in rural areas. They also said that the police should have allowed them to help the victim or taken him to hospital themselves, rather than wait for the ambulance.

After a long wait, the ambulance finally arrived and the injured person was shifted to Wenlock.

GOOD TO LEARN THIS KIND OF APPROACH TOWARDS THE PUBLIC IN THE GULF COUNTRIES. Now coming back to the Indian context, all are in hurry, no time to think about others. Even the beggar want to reach his begging place at the earliest and rest for the day and not work. The government official wants to reach his office early, not to work but gossip and plan for the days collection.
And if you observe the general psychology, the more the education, more is their urgency. uneducated are much better than those pseudo-cultured high class.

I agree with joe Gonsalves, Mangalore. Rickshaws are the key contributors for the worst city traffic issues. They assume themselves as they own the road. Can drive from any side, any corner, turn any where, hit anybody. Many times they just scratch your vehicle, smile at you as a joker and drive away. they find any passenger... anywhere... they just turn towards them .. irrespective anybody coming behind them... nothing. Unless some tough drivers stop them then and there and thrash them, they will not learn the lesson. These RTOs sit for meeting once in a blue moon day and discuss some stupid subjects , take some stupid decisions... where as in reality so many problems are there to address.

It is high time people start using public transport system and avoid these 2 wheeler. some 20 years back, 2 wheelers were preferred mode of transport both cost wise and convenience. But today's traffic congestion is very dangerous for these two wheeler.
Moreover, the drivers are not bothered about other road users and its a scary situation even in hampankatta. Police should be pro-active and take serious steps against violation of traffic rules.

As a very senior driver I am constrained to point out that the rickshaws in Mangalore pose a very serious problem. The drivers do not have concern for the other vehicle drivers. They overtake from any side even when there is hardly any space in between.

In this particular instance medical assistance should have been provided immediately to help the victim and to ensure that he would not lose a lot of blood.

The police did the right thing. The delay in arrival of the ambulance is another case. But in the event of sever accidents with broken bones etc. the general public would only aggravate the condition of the victim unless anyone has paramedical training.
