Udupi, Dec 23: Two grown-up mentally ill sisters, who were kept confined to their house by their mother for about 10 years, were rescued on Tuesday December 23 at Bannanje here.

Sulochana, a resident of Siribeedu in Bannanje, had kept her daughters Soumya (38) (name changed) and Veena (32) (name changed) confined to the house. They were rescued after locals informed the media and the matter came to the notice of the women and child welfare department and officials of the district administration.

It is learnt that Sulochana's husband Seetarama had passed away some ten years ago. His death reportedly had a deep impact on the daughters, and added to that, they were also allegedly harassed following his death, resulting in their mental health deteriorating. The sisters were brilliant in academics in school and used to go to work, but after their father's death, they stopped working, sources said.

Since then, it is said that Sulochana did not let her daughters venture out of the house at all. She kept them confined inside the house so much so that even the locals were unaware of their existence until recently, sources said.

On Monday December 22, the local media focussed on the issue after being alerted by some persons. On Tuesday, the officials of the women and child welfare department along with police and women's groups arrived at the house with the intention to rescue the sisters.

However, intially, Sulochana refused to open the door. After about one-and-a-half hours of coaxing failed to produce any result, a relative of Sulochana arrived and managed to convince her to open the door.

The officials then took the sisters and their mother to the hospital by 108 ambulance for checkup.

Speaking to reporters, Rajendra Bekal, deputy director of women and child welfare department, said that the three women would be first medically examined, counselled and if needed, sent to a rehabilitation home.

It is learnt that Sulochana also has a younger son who is working in another city. He used to  send them money regularly to meet their expenses, sources said. A relative who runs a cloth store in Udupi also helped them with the expenses, it is gathered.

As the news spread, locals gathered in large numbers at the premises of the house.

Instead of locking her daughters , she should have asked help from NGOs to get her treated.May be fear or ignorance might have prevented her from doing so.Now being out they will get treatment and hope they will be back in the society as good citizens

Atlast the rescue came to the mother and daughters. The death of the husband/father must have caused them all a big schock and to daughters harassment from others made them not to mingle with soceity, and deeper Depression. At this state such sick Persons will be a centre for any attack from public so the mother didnt allow them to participate in Society.but she too was not in a Position to handle them properly .all chaos.noone helped them except son and relativ only with Money .Moral help could have helped them better. One way mother is not guilty, other side she too didnt know what to do.so better kept inside.Their relatives or neighbours should have helped but they harassed and now playing innocent as not knowing.Hope all of them get a proper therapy Treatment and get well soon.

Very sad. These are the times we live in. All we do is communalise everything and fight between ourselves due to politicians and extremists stirring up trouble. We don't care for our neighbours anymore. If someone from another community tries to help, they are attacked. Shame on all people of DK. Just sit back and reflect where we are heading.

    Dear Brayn ,
In our country , they raped minor children, even animals(I read one incident last time in daijiworld, that too with a calf). Do you think these mentally ill daughters are safe outside ? She is just trying to protect. She nursed them both for 10years with her weak hands and strong heart while her son was working in other city.Really Great mother!!

firstly thank u for action, This not to blame other than us..mom is not cruel.. She avoided to harnessed .. We know the people from around the world with social network.. Even we worry for those who don't know.. It's ridicules to know after 10 years.. I don't believe that. Society are the culprit or villagers are the culprit. Hope all this will be lesson for us!

Very sad to hear this..what society are we living in? We are in the year 2015 and we still don't know who lives in our neighbour's house? The neighbours should have known who lived in that house.

I pray that the sisters and the mother will be rehabilitated soon. Let us all act like responsible neighours and citizens of our country.

What a tragedy..!!!what type of people are we ??Are we machines or human beings ???
It is impossible that neighbours were unaware of their existence for the past ten years.
Whether the Police and the local politicians were in deep sleep ?
    Shame on us...!!!

    Dear Brayn,
in this case mother is not Cruel,
Curel is thier relatives and our society.

@Brayan,Bharain,please dont give comments without knowing properly,.In another Forum was told that the Girls were sick due to lack of proper Food .since they were utter poor were not in a Situation to buy Food, and malnuetrition was the cause and stopped talking and other functions. It can be quite possible.we dont know. There are times life can be so cruel ,with out having enough Information, everybody starts hitting Stones to the fallen Person. As the head of the Person died, the Problem started it seems.Still I cant understand why the son stays away and not looking after.some mystery is there.and others are harassing them.Hope they get some help and get well.
