My captaincy to vary from Cook's: England skipper Morgan

Canberra, Jan 11 (IANS): New England skipper Eoin Morgan, tasked with leading the three-time World Cup finalists in the quadrennial event, has said he would adopt a different approach to captaincy than his predecessor Alastair Cook.

Cook was replaced by Morgan after England lost a one-day series against Sri Lanka recently.

"There will be certain things Alastair would do that I wouldn't just because it is his character and not mine," Morgan was quoted as saying by bbc.com Sunday.

"When I've captained in the past I've tended to strip things back to the basics. That's my method. I don't think it (the side) will differ in a huge amount."

Morgan said he would encourage his players to play with freedom and be fearless in their approach.

"Over the last seven or eight months I think we've seen a considerable change in the method that we've used both in batting and bowling. That will continue to go in the same direction and guys will be encouraged to play with freedom," 28-year-old said.

The left-handed batsman also exuded confidence ahead of the mega event saying the boys were looking forward to playing in the tournament.

"The excitement within the group is high, and guys are quietly confident. We've had a difficult time over the last 12 months, but I think the individual world-class performances we've put in at stages give guys a lot of belief and it gives me a lot of confidence coming into these three months," he opined.

England take on Australia in their first Cup match 14 Feb at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
