Golfer Amandeep steals show on Day 1


Ahmedabad, Jan 13 (IANS): Amandeep Drall played an impressive round to grab the lead on the first day of the second leg in the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour here Tuesday.

The girl from Panchkula, Amandeep carded the only under-par score of the day, 1 under 71 at the Kalhaar Blues and Green Golf Course. Trailing Amandeep by one shot is Chandigarh's Saaniya Sharma, who is placed second.

Playing in only her second event as a professional, Amandeep played an inspired front nine carding four birdies on the fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth holes with a lone bogie on the second.

However, the latter half was a different story as she carded bogies on the 13th, 14th and 18th holes. She carded just one birdie on the 10th to return with a score of 1 under 71.

In comparison, Saaniya played a cautious round carding just one double bogey on the sixth and two birdies on the first and seventh to finish at level par 72.

Kapurthala's Gursimar Badwal carded 1 over 73 to take third position. She carded two bogies on the sixth and eighth with three bogies on the first, 10th and 15th. She is followed by Vaishavi Sinha and Vani Kapoor, who are placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Vaishavi had an indifferent day and holed bogies on the first, fourth, 11th, 15th and 16th along with birdies on the 13th, 14th and 18th to finish at 2 over 74.

Delhi’s Vani Kapoor too had an off day, carding four bogies on the first, second, fourth and 10th. She made a comeback with birdies on the 12th, 14th and 17th but a double bogie on the 18th pushed her to fifth with a score of 3 over 75.

Kolkata’s Neha Tripathi and Jaipur’s Pallavi Jain finished with identical scores of 4 over 76 to be placed tied sixth. Veteran Smriti Mehra and Delhi’s Ankita Tiwana are eighth and ninth respectively.

The Rs.7 lakh event will culminate Jan 15.
