Mangaluru diocese creates awareness on govt schemes for minorities

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 28: "The union and state governments have implemented various schemes for minorities and other backward classes. These schemes are their rights," said Melvin Noronha, well-known advocate of Mangaluru and secretary of Mangalore diocesan pastoral council.

He was speaking at a programme on 'Government schemes for minorities' organized by the Institute for Social Development in collaboration with the Development Committee of Mangalore Diocese on Sunday January 25.

M P Noronha further said, "Many of our poor people are ignorant of various schemes floated by the government. It is our duty to help them avail these benefits."

Fr Oswald Monteiro, director of Mangalore Diocese Development Committee and Institute for Social Development welcomed the gathering and later in his session elaborated the meaning of development and how people of any community can improve their economic situation by following Asset Based Community Development Approach. He further said that real development is visible only when people fully participate in any activity and make maximum use of their own resources and opportunities available.

Thereafter, the resource persons Ivan Menezes and Shanthi D’Souza, project coordinators in CODP, explained about various government schemes and different types of scholarships available to minorities and backward classes. Group discussion was facilitated on the topic.

The day’s programme commenced with a prayer service led by Sr Lenita, UFS, the co-convener of Development Committee and concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Rita Serrao, the secretary.

Lancy D’Cunha compered the programme. The participants included various Development Committee conveners, CAP conveners, parish vice-president and secretaries.

Its a great step, I was always wondering how any needy can benefit from such Government sachems and how we can reach people. If CODP can takes initiative and does this, its a great help for rural minority community. Apart from Government schemes, in the Parish level or Diocese level also we have quite few benefit, that needs to be reached too as well.

Excellent move by Mangalore diocese. Hope all the dioceses in Karnataka take up this task to educate the people on various schemes. A separate such programme for all the Parish Priests and the Parish Council members will help the people avail benefits from the Government.

Peace and respect for the minority community is the very important social development of the present situation in India.
Let the Govt. of India implement the scheme of religious tolerance first, which in turn develop socio economic of minority. All these money spending can be saved.

This is a very good move from the codp, most of the Govt schemes for minorities or general public or for agriculturists are not known to most of the citizens. It is also requested to publish in this media what are the schemes are available so that who missed the chance to attend this seminar will be benefited.

This is a good move. CODP should keep contact with rural parishes through newsletters and continue their good work of helping the needy. Obviously its the people from rural areas that require and are eligible for such schemes.

There are many Government Schemes for which, taxpayers money is taken up, through budget reservation. If there are no applications for a pertinent scheme, the money is redundant. Spreading awareness through programs such as this is a social work in a way.

Good luck to CODP in their endeavors.
