Mangaluru: Rai suggests revision of auto fares, DC stands firm

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Feb 2: Ramanath Rai, the district in charge minister has advised the deputy commissioner to revise the auto fares again. The deputy commissioner is also the president of the regional transport authority.

The auto fares were revised only in January second week and the auto drivers were told to follow the rates from January 12. But the auto drivers who did not follow the new fare had stopped operating for three days protesting the implementation of new tariff.

When the district administration did not respond positively, they had called off the strike after assurance from the district in charge minister.

A meeting regarding the issue was held at circuit house on Sunday and the deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, RTO and concerned authorities met with the officials from auto associations in the presence of the minister.

“I want the passengers as well as the auto drivers" was what Ramanath Rai had to say in the dispute. But the DC made his stance very clear. He again and again said that the interest of the passengers will be kept in mind. He also stated that no injustice has been done to auto drivers when the revision was made.

DC said that Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have the highest fare compared to other places in the state. He also gave the data of Mumbai and Kasargod fares which are lower than in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The DC in his revision had brought down the minimum fare from Rs 25 to Rs 20 which the auto drivers did not follow at all.

Now the DC has told the auto drivers to prove why they cannot charge the revised rate and run the autos profitably. They have to come up with the figures. The DC also said that Rs 10 is sufficient for every kilometre to run autos profitably.

The less said the better about the auto drivers of the city. They are the most uncultured, uncouth and insensitive breed. One old couple(aged 80 and 90yrs) I know, hired an auto to go to the market at suratkal and the distance from home to market is hardly 1 km. The auto driver charged them rs 25 as minimum and when the couple argued, he abused them and threatened them saying next time if they need him, he will never oblige them. I think the district administration should take very stern action against such errant drivers whose sole aim is to fleece the customers and make money. its a shame that they have no feelings for anyone be it old or young and how their conscience allows them to do such atrocities and still get a good night's sleep.

I am fully supporting our D.C, S.P and R.T.A Body.During the meeting he had enough opportunity to auto drivers to prove that the R.T.A has taken a wrong decision. They have taken good decision also considering humanity facts towards auto drivers. When the fuel price is up trend, the same D.C. supported Auto Drivers and safe guard their interest. Now the Fuel price reduced drastically and D.C. has to safe guard the interest of the public. But these Auto drivers are not able accept the fact / figures which was presented before them. They do not have answers to these fact/figure, still they are demanding not to decrease the price. Gone for strike for 3 days and the people of Mangalore had led their life normally. How do they are able sustain ? That means they have power to sustain. That's Good. But there should be a limit. Now it is the prestige issue for the Union leaders and they wants to show their supremacy. This is only EGO issue and no one able to help them. It is the mind set of the Union Leaders to accept reality and face situation. This Union Leaders does not wants / accept the defeat and they are playing with honest auto drivers as well as public at large.

Dear DC,be firm on your stand. Now auto drivers started charging more than than the normal actual charge to cover up their loses due to protest/strike from the gullible passengers.I think Ramanath Pai has just got of from his slumber to receive his share of his commission and directed the DC to revise Auto fare for no reason without any logic just to build up his image in front of the public

The vola cabs may soon replace autos then only these errant auto drivers will learn a lesson.

There will be no doubt Mangluru might be having the highest auto fare in the whole of India, the looting and forcible extortion from harried passengers apart!! Jai Hind!!

Good comment. in addition to your view, Same as drivers done strike to increase or keep high charges, public should make strike "untill the prices are not reduced NO ONE WILL USE TAXI" use public transport. As Mr.V Moili told to use public transport which can help to bring down the fuel price and of-course which help to rush free roads.

    1. The Rickshaw drivers should know that their demands are unjust.
    2. Mr .Rai's stand on this has to be taken with 'a pinch of salt'. Pinches do not hurt the likes of Rai.
    3. Rai and Ivan must make a comparative study of Auto fares in Metros, to know that the 'Minimum Fare'here is ridiculously high.
    4. Ivan is dumb as usual. It is a loss for the auto drivers in the long run...mate! Nobody will opt for autos for 'short distances'.
    5. For once do not interfere with the District Administration which is doing a good job.
    6. Do not listen...it's your funeral.
