Church attack: NHRC notices to Home Ministry, Delhi govt

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI): The NHRC has issued notices to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi government and police seeking detailed reports on the status of investigation into the alleged vandalisation of a south Delhi church.

According to an official statement released today, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chief Secretaries of Union Home Ministry and Delhi government and the Commissioner of Police calling for a report on the incident within 10 days.

In the fifth such incident since November, St Alphonsa's Church in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area was vandalised by some unidentified persons yesterday, sparking outrage among the Christian community which alleged that it is part of a "hate campaign".

The commission has sought the report taking suo motu cognisance of some media reports regarding the incident of breaking open the doors of St Alphonsa's Church and defiling of the place of worship and the objects held sacred, the statement said.

NHRC also received telephonic information from advocate Manoj V George alleging that in spite of a formal written complaint by the church priest Vincent Salvatore, police was not taking necessary and appropriate action by registering a proper FIR and commencing effective investigation, it said.

Yesterday, a member of the commission, Justice Cyriac Joseph, had visited the church site to take an account of the situation.

Incidents of vandalisation and suspected arson at Christian religious institutions have happened in Dilshad Garden, Rohini and Jasola areas of Delhi.

NHRC had issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Delhi last month as well seeking a report on attacks targeting churches in the national capital.

..You are talking like, Sonia & pappu has solved many cases like Byomkesh baxi..i understand your feeling but anybody who have little common sense will not blame BJP/RSS for these incidents & it also during election time..they are nothing to gain, instead they will get a bad name..every incident may not be communal or so called attack..MODI OR RAJNATH cant guard religious places including mandir..its police dept works..and police each time on record said its robbery..Mandir robbery is now a days a daily news..now believing or not believing left to you..but if you go on believing it then during every election it will happen for sure, for the benefit of secular parties..

    Jeevan,

The issue here is vandalizing places of worship which is as bad as vandalizing our own place of dwelling for no reason. Just imagine if the Hindu temples are coming under such attacks whom you will blame and why ? If you are a matured person, please stop mixing up politics in most of your non-sense comments. Grow up man and have some sense while commenting.

    Flavian,
There is some sense in this comment.
Why congress has not reopened the case of Mangalore Church attack.
They could have given justice to Christians.
All are doing lip service for the sake of vote bank and keep the society divided.
Finally you me and Jeevan will be fighting and arguing and they will be enjoying.

NHRC members seem to be following Christian faith and they act only in such situations. No one was worried of Hindus whether it is Pundits of Kashmir or Assam. This is a big drama to create confusion in the minds of Christians, Muslims and divide Hindu Vote and prevent them from voting the BJP.

Jeevan, this policy should be applied for all the states. If everybody have to form their own security, then why we need Govt, police, military etc. why the people have to pay tax? don't try to bring your own policy to hide the failure of your Central govt to stop these repeated attacks. And Central govt is totally failed to stop the ceasefire violation by the Pakistan at the border. So you do not say, form the private army and fight with Pakis. Be honest and admit the failure of Feku govt. What happened to his 56" chest?
