Udupi, Jan 9: The work on the widening of Malpe-Manipal road began here on Monday January 8 with the demolition of structures along the Adiudupi-Kalsanka stretch.

The works began in the morning with demolition of buildings along the Karavali Cross in Adiudupi and all along the Kalsanka road.

Speaking to press persons, MLA K Raghupati Bhat announced a reward of rupees one lac per cent to those who gave up their land willingly, and Rs 50,000 per cent for those who delayed their decision to surrender the land. A total compensation of Rs 14 crore has been sanctioned.

Some of the people who had refused to give up their lands and had moved court have now consented for the same, he said. Their cases would be taken up judiciously.

He further said that compensation for even those who had not applied for it would be discussed about at a meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday January 9.

Among those present were deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj, PWD executive engineer K Suresh Shetty and local CMC members.
