Mangaluru: This International Book Giving Day, spread smiles among needy kids

Mangaluru, Feb 9: A book is one's companion at all times, from long journeys to the dining table at home. The joy derived from reading a good book is something that stays with you long after you have finished the book. Unfortunately, though there are plenty of book shops and libraries around, not all are blessed with easy access to books.

In a laudable initiative that is worth emulating by all, city-based Giving Tree Trust has launched a campaign where it will collect new/used books from donors and present them to children of an orphanage.

Few know that February 14 is not only Valentine's Day but also International Book Giving Day, a day dedicated to getting new, used, and borrowed books into the hands of as many children as possible.

Author Neil Gaiman once quoted, "A book is a dream that you hold in your hand". This thought has inspired the team of volunteers at Giving Tree Trust. On the occasion of International Book Giving Day, the team is collecting new, used and borrowed books to build a library for kids in one of the orphanages in Mangaluru.

Already, posters have been dispalyed in schools, colleges and various libraries of Mangaluru, boxes for collection of books have been placed in various apartments of the city, and starting Monday February 9, a big box has also been placed at City Centre Mall where one can deposit the books. Also, for any assistance, a special desk will be arranged at the same mall on February 14 and February 15.

You can give any books such as novels, old text books, new notebooks, dictionaries, story books, or any other books which can be useful for kids. The team has a vision of giving as many new, used or borrowed books to as many kids as possible

Help the team in enhancing and enlarging a child’s world. Your selfless act of dedicating a book may turn a child’s future brighter. Be that light in someone’s darkness and dedicate your time to make a difference in a child’s life.

Those interested can contact team Giving Tree Trust and donate the books. The last date to donate books is February.

As Mother Teresa said, "It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving". So grab your old books or get new ones, bring some sunshine in the life of a little child.
