Udupi, Feb 10: A gang barged into the house of Sooryanarayana Rao Swamiji near the petrol bunk between Kunjalu and Cherkady near Brahmavar in the taluk and robbed a practitioner of native medicines staying there. This happened at around 11 pm on Sunday February 8.

The robbers relieved the family of various items including about 50 grams of gold ornaments, Rs 18,000 in cash, laptop, cellphone etc worth Rs 1.5 lac.

The owner of the house, Sooryanarayana, stays in Shivamogga. His son, Sandesh Rao, lives in Cherkady with his wife and two small children. Sandesh also serves as practitioner of native medicines.

At about 11 pm on Sunday, someone knocked at the door of Sandesh, and sought to collect medicines for his leg pain. Sandesh opened the window door and asked him to come next day. The man claimed that he had come from a distant place, and asked a place to sleep, upon which Sandesh came out to offer him bedsheet and pillow. Some people, who were hiding nearby, pounced upon Sandesh, and forcefully led him inside the house.

The robbers put off the main switch, forced the couple to place the cell phone in 'off' mode, and then robbed ear rings, ring, Karimani chain, and cash belonging to Sandesh's wife. The robbers reportedly had come equipped with sword, rod, and sickle, indicating that they had planned this robbery in advance. The gang appeared to be having about eight to ten members.

Udupi deputy superintendent of police, Chandrashekhar, Brahmavar police circle inspector, Arun Nayak, and station house officer, GirishKumar S, visited the spot and took up investigation.

At such isolated places 11 PM is too late to open the door for a stranger. But since he is native medicine practitioner, he must have be used to such cases late at night. Good that their lives are spared.
