Yaduveer named Mysuru royal family heir

Mysuru, Feb 12 (PTI): Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs was today declared as the new heir to the Mysuru royal family by Pramoda Devi Wodeyar, widow of the last scion Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wodeyar.

Yaduveer is the grandson of Princess Gayatri Devi, the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar.

"Chiranjivi Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs' adoption ceremony will happen according to family traditions. I believe that my decision has the blessings of my beloved husband Late scion Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wodeyar," an emotional Pramoda Devi told reporters here.

"This decision has consent from his (Srikanta Datta Wodeyar) sisters and other family members," she said.

Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, the last descendant of the Wodeyar dynasty, died of cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Bengaluru on December 10, 2013.

Wodeyar, the only son of Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, the last ruling Maharaja of Mysore, and his second wife, Maharani Tripura Sundari Ammani Avaru, succeeded his father as the head of his dynasty in September 1974.

He had remained the titular head of the erstwhile royalty during the famous Dasara festivities after succeeding as heir to his father in 1974.

Pramoda Devi is a distant cousin of Wodeyar and as the couple have no children, she will now have to adopt Yaduveer to nominate him as the successor.

Pramoda Devi said Yaduveer is currently doing his BA in Economics and English at Boston University in America.

She said "like me Yaduveer belongs to Bettada Kote family," adding that the relationship between Wodeyar family of Mysuru and Bettada Kote family dates back to 200 years.

After his adoption on February 23, Yaduveer will be renamed as Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar.

Interestingly the last rite of the late scion was performed by Chaduranga Kantaraj Urs, the other nephew of the late Wodeyar, fueling speculations that he may be named as the successor. Recently Chaduranga Kantaraj Urs had gone to the media on succession issue.

The Wodeyar dynasty ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1399 to 1947, the last king being Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, who ruled from 1940 until Indian independence in 1947 when he acceded his Kingdom to the dominion of India, but continued as the Maharaja until India became a Republic in 1950.

    Hi Rita,
Your observation "The lady looking grim...."
Being family sure memories must be flooding back, viz.: Princess Gayathri Devi, the Grandmother of the King to be ( Yaduveer) having died of cancer in 1974.
King Jayachamaraja Wodeyar dying an early death when he was 55 years old.
The happy early days until1969 when the role of kings was brought down by the Govt.
    etc...
Lets wish them the best as they go on doing good to Mysore in whatever way they can.
    Kind Regards

    Hi,

Nice to know that the Royal Lineage will continue.

This, as the Wodeyar family known for adoptions in the past too, it was sad to read that the Late Srikanatadatta not having a child, the lineage came to a abrupt halt.

Wish Yaduveer the best with his new responsibilities.

    Kind Regards

The ‘curse’ of Alamelamma goes like this: ‘1.Malingi maDuvaagali 2.Talakadu maraLaagali 3.Mysuru arasarige makkaLagadhirali, (Let Malingi become a whirlpool, let Talakad become sand, let the Mysore Kings fail to beget sons).’ For over 400 years, the Mysore royal family has been reeling under her curse. Every alternate generation goes childless and is forced to adopt a heir. While the last Wodeyar, Jayachamaraja, was adopted, his son, Srikantadatta Narasimha Wodeyar, has no children. This pattern has been the same for 19 generations, since the 16th century. However, the reason could be in-breeding as the Raja always married a close relative as ‘Maharani’ and if she did not produce a male heir, the adoption took place, again within the close family. There are instances, many Rajas had male children from other ‘wives’ but were not eligible for heir or ‘crown prince’ position. Hence some believe this Alamelamma’s curse to be a cooked up story. (Malangi on river Cauveri was always a whirlpool and Talakad of course is a sand dune now, ASI is still digging up ancient temples buried in sand).

Royal family of Mysuru has done a lot to the people under their dynasty by being liberal in the developmental activities of the erstwhile present state of Karnataka like the palaces, museums, parks, roads, education and have given a helping hand to the ruling republic. Long live their name and fame. Best wishes to the ed one.

This Royal family is a cursed one! They dont have a many male progeny to take that forward. Nothing much is left with this royal family, except banni mantapa pooja and few other rituals during dasara.. all they have is "family and property disputes".. though new king who is foreign educated, can improve Mysore and make few palaces as resort/restaurant and tourist spots as Maharajas in Rajasthan doing!... but in any case, looks like he has GAJA KESARI YOGA! as an outsider, you get to be crown prince/king... vhe vhe vhe! ..isiliye I beleive in "LUCK FACTOR and HANE BARAHA"! vhe vhe vhe

@Vellano,Mumbai,why are you so much writing against them.Afterall it is not in their Hands and it can happen to anybody me,you too.I find this Royal Family is a mystic to iIndia ,karnataka. Many Tourists come and have a look into this previous Maharaja Palace and enjoy it.Even they are not haveing their previous Georgious time, they work as any other Person.Having no issue, and adapting is their Business and happiness.Dont make it in public a big issue. It pains one, specially to them who are concerned. How would you feel when one tells you in such instance suppose you are issueless?like Mobbing?
