Mangaluru, Feb 13: In an instance of violation of Forest Act, Public Works Department(PWD) officials allegedly axed trees at the PWD quatres at Urwa Stores here on Friday Febraury 13.

Shashidhar Shetty of National Environment Care Fedaration, speaking to Daijiworld said "The PWD officials and labourers without the permission from the forest department axed the trees. This is in violation of the Forest Act of 1927. Cases should be registered against those officials who violated the law,"

"There was no need to axe the trees. Totally 18 trees were axed without the permission from the forest department. Forest officials should have been present while cutting the trees." Shetty added.

Upendra Kumar, resident of the area near the PWD quartres said "We locals demanded the PWD and Forest Departments to cut the branches of trees which were leaning over the roof. In some instances, the branches have collapsed on the roofs in the past."

But all are not happy with the decision of axing the trees. That too by government officials who are supposed to follow laws.

I urge the authorities to come down heavily on those who cut the trees. They have committed an inhuman act and done great disservice to the public and the environment. They deserve to be given condign punishment so that the others learn a lesson from this. Please do not spare them. So unfortunate that such a thing has happened. If they have cut down 18 trees, make them plant at least 50 saplings and it should be their responsibility to nurture them. Trees are like our own children.

Fortunately trees don't have blood. If they had blood roads would have been full of blood. But they have life. But No freedom. But still they give fruits. If not fruit, they give leaves. If not leaves, they give timber...Please don't cut trees for human errors and mistakes.

Law and Order is for poor and helpless. Govt.Officials, Elected Officials break every law there is in books. The reason is back up at higher level. City Planning is worst along with Engineering dept. Everything works on basis of "HOW MUCH IS THE COMMISSION"
