Bengaluru: Siddu criticises BBC for telecasting 'India’s Daughter' documentary

Bengaluru, Mar 8: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah sharply criticised the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for telecasting the documentary "India’s Daughter" based on the interview of Mukesh Singh, the perpetrator of the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape of the woman widely known as Nirbhaya.

Speaking after conferring the Kittur Rani Chennamma Awards on six organisations and 18 women under various categories on the occasion of International Women’s Day celebrations in Bengaluru on Sunday, he felt BBC should not have made the documentary on the first place.

Siddaramaiah said, "It is not right on part of BBC to malign the character and esteem of the victim of the incident."

He said everybody has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. But that right should not be exercised at the cost hurting feelings of others, he contended.

The chief minister also condemned the controversial statements made by Defence counsel for the accused, M L Sharma and A P Singh.

The Bar Council of India (BCI) had issued notice to two lawyers for their outrageous comments about women in the documentary, he said and hoped that stringent action would be taken against these lawyers.

Siddaramaiah said the Congress government in the State is committed to protect the interests of women and the Special Treatment Unit for Women had been set in all the districts with an objective of providing help to victims of sexual harassment.

The State Government was extending every kind of support, including legal assistance, he said.

Explaining the various schemes implemented by the State Government to protect the interests of women, the chief minister said ensuring gender equality in the society was the duty of the Government and also all social organisations as well as women’s activists.

"Though the principle of gender equality is enshrined in the Constitution in its preamble, gender equality still is a distant dream for women in the country. It is time for them to unite and fight for their rights," he said.

Exactly, we women looking for prevention than cure. People will understand the mentality of the rapists while watching the documentary India's daughter. The rapists think that this is the culture. Instead of banning "India's daughter" wish the Government watches the same and analyse the whole episode and justify why not to air. Also includes NGOs who work against Atrocities on Women in formulating committees, the laws and precautionary measures to deal with Women safety issues. The people to be honoured who work at the grass root level were at the Azad grounds, Malleshwaram.

Something is seriously wrong with Indians in general irrespective of party lines. They don't like movie slumdog millionaire but OK with slums.Don't like documentary on rape but OK with rape.Don't like discussion on the evils plaguing the society but OK with evils.Whom are we fooling? Is it correct to say that the documentary will incite Indians more than the rape itself?

M Venkaiah Naidu d: “We can ban the film in India. But this is an international conspiracy to defame India. We will see how the film can be stopped abroad too.”

Don't mind this guys statements,he is having a bad week. he already had bashing from Narendra modi earlier this week on a different issue for speaking such nonsense. he will be getting one more round of bashing.

India does not have an issue with documentary and we welcome it, our issue is with glorification of the statements made by the convict and his lawyers. We don't want other rapists around the world to follow what this pervert is saying. Normal people may be disgusted but future perverts may use it as a justification to do more damaging acts than they are already doing. The convict was already on death row at the time of the interview and is now appealing, the pervert just confirmed his own death warrant for not showing remorse.

I am sure Siddu has not seen the video. That's why he is acting like "Buddu". In no way the video has maligned the character of the victim, on the contrary it has helped the public to relate to the incident and know the real story of Jyothi (who had lot of dreams and goals like our own children) . Besides it also shows that some of the defence lawyer's in India are no better than rapists and if they get an opportunity they themselves will be one. Nirbhaya's parents had no objection to the release of this video. But our politicians are too much pained by it. Perhaps they want to show the world that all is well under their rule.

Darryl, Have you read TOI on 4/3/2015.
Home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday made a statement in the Rajya Sabha on the issue of telecast of the controversial interview of Nirbhaya's rapist.
The home minister said the permission conditions were violated by the documentary maker. He said that permission had been granted for social purposes and the documentary was not to be used for commercial reasons and in the public arena. He assured the House no such permission would be granted in the future.

Two years to shoot a documentary? Relax guys, now is the time to pass the buck. If the documentary was non controversial everybody would have claimed credit. In India there is no accountability. If you want the truth out, use RTI.
