Karwar: Foreigner's post-funeral rites performed as per Hindu customs

Daijiworld Media Network - Karwar (SP)

Karwar, Mar 12: As per the will left behind by a citizen of Scotland, his friend discharged his ashes in the sea and performed other post-funeral rites as per Hindu customs at Gokarn here on Tuesday March 10.

William from Scotland used to visit Gokarna every year since sometime. He had come to know about the deep-embedded faith among the Hindus that a person whose funeral is conducted or ashes and bones are immersed at this holy place will never be born again, as the deceased will directly reach the heaven.

He had left behind a will, expressing the desire that his ashes and bones should be discharged into the Arabian Sea here after his death.

This year too, William had come to Gokarna along with his friend from England, Geoffrey. William fell ill during this visit in January, and died while being taken to Mangaluru for treatment. His body was preserved till William's close relatives came here last week.

After consigning his body to flames, William's ashes and bones were brought to Gokarna by Geoffrey, who not only got his head tonsured for the purpose as required, but also participated in the religious procedures as per the guidance of priests, Nagaraja Aithal and Anant Adi on Tuesday, to fulfill the wishes of his deceased friend.

    No need to convert to perform a pooja. Come & visit to Shri. Kukke Subramanya temple, how many your religion people come to perform pooja. In Hindu culture there is no restriction to convert to perform any pooja like other religion. Improve your GK.

    @P.Shrish,

    But you would surely object a Hindu attending Pentecostal church same way as you claim others are free to perform puja?

    When any living creature perishes, that creature is HISTORY.... you can burn, bury, or send the remains in outer space......it is irrelevant, futile....Heaven, Hell are ILLUSIONS FOR THE LIVING & NOT THE DEAD !!!!!!

    An exercise in futility. Science has advanced so much in all spheres, but to date does any one know what happens when we die ??? Neither Religious beliefs nor science. As far as I am concerned, the moment one breathes his last on earth, that is the end. Period. All post death rituals are a waste of time and money. Once DEAD - GONE forever, no doubt if in our lifetime we have lived a good life and have not harmed anyone, we will be missed by our near and dear - that too for a short period - then life goes on ...

    so gm, do you think that all those who earn money either by hook or crook and become millionaires and die after that will not be questioned. there are many who earn money in illegal ways , enjoy life in all ways and suddenly die without any trials in this world. SO CAN WE SAY HE IS SO LUCKY AND GOOD PERSON? NO!!! THERE IS TIME OF ACCOUNTABILITY. EACH ONE WILL BE QUESTIONED ON PRESCRIBED TIME AND DAY. LETS WAIT.

    He had left behind a will wishing his ashes be discharged into Arabian sea. He died when he was on a visit to the coast so that his last wish is fulfilled rather smoothly. You may call it a sheer coincident but you all know nothing happens on this earth without God's will!!! RIP William.

    It is scientifically correct. According to Hinduism, life and the various species originated by the combination of planetary globes and the five manifestations of nature namely air, water, fire, land and sky.
    Our body have 80% of water and so and earth.
    Our body has made of these five elements and it has to be diluted with these elements.
