Mangaluru: Remembering Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah, the generous founder of CorpBank

By John B Monteiro

Mangaluru, Mar 12: Today, March 12, is being celebrated as 110th Founders Day by Corporation Bank by opening 110 new service outlets, including new branches, ATMs and e-lobbies. Against this background it is interesting to go back to 110 years and highlight the life and role of the founder – Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim Saheb Bahadur.

"The public are hereby informed that at a meeting of the principal residents of Udupi held on 11th and 18th instant it has been decided to start an Association styled 'The Canara Banking Corporation (Udupi) Ltd' (after explaining the objects and advantages, the letter continued). It will thus be seen that the primary object in forming the ‘Corporation’ is not only to cultivate habits of thrift among all classes of people, without distinction of caste or creed, but also habits of co-operation among all classes. This is ‘Swadeshism’ pure and simple, and every lover of the country is expected to come forward and co-operate in achieving the end in view. All possible guarantee is offered by the rules for the safety of the funds and their good management. The business will be started from 16th March…"

This is an excerpt from the first official letter, dated February 19, 1906, written by Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim Saheb Bahadur under his signature sent to the public, mainly of Udupi. The bank was projected to start, and did, on March 16, 1906 under the title of Canara Banking Corporation (Udupi) Ltd – the first such bank in Tulunadu. The only other bank functioning then was the Mangalore Branch of Bank of Madras opened in 1868, the predecessor of today’s State Bank of India. That bank was elitist catering mainly to the whites and leading locals. Udupi was served through the visit of British Agent of the bank’s Mangalore Branch once a fortnight. The local system of raising loans comprising Holy, Kuri and Hundi was marked by high interest rates. It was in this context that Abdullah took the initiative to start a bank in Udupi.

Though a Muslim, Abdullah was highly regarded as a leading merchant and landholder. That is how he could carry with him the 12 first Directors of the bank which had only one other Muslim. He was the only Muslim among the 10 signatories to the Memorandum of Association sent for registration on May 13, 1906. But, he walked tall as Founder President of the bank from 1906 to 1929, with short breaks during his Haj pilgrimage. Abdullah brought to the bank not only his prestige and resources but also the participation of fellow Muslims, rich traders of the time, as shareholders of the bank. In 1908, community-wise, Muslims were the largest shareholders – 251 in number representing an amount of Rs 57,609. The other leading shareholders were Saraswaths, 850 (Rs 33,273); Gowd Saraswaths, 376 (Rs 33,003); Shivali, 299 ( Rs 16,704); Catholics, 66 (Rs 6,172); and Protestants, 33 (Rs 1,309). Thus, at its very inception the bank had acquired a cosmopolitan character.

It is significant to note that the first office of the bank was started in a portion of Abdullah’s palatial mansion in Udupi. The shareholders in 1908 totalled 2,661 compared to 29,725 at the end of March 2006 -100 years after its founding. A century after the founding, it had 835 branches, 901 ATMs and 11,325 employees. Abdullah lives on through these statistics. The founders of banks are so gratefully remembered that some banks, like Central Bank, have the portrait of the founders displayed in their offices. As for Abdullah, a street next to his mansion is named after him and to mark the centenary of Corporation Bank, his statue has been unveiled in Udupi.

According to the late M V Kamath, who wrote the bank’s history, Corporation Bank – A Corporate Journey, Abdullah was a Deccani Muslim and possibly of Turkish origin whose ancestors had migrated from the Deccan to South Kanara. His father, Haji Kasim Haji Budan Saheb, was a rich landlord. Abdullah had no children. His family owned large tracts of agricultural land in the district. His share of wealth was about 1,000 murrahs of rice annually. He was the sole distributing agent for Wimco matches for the whole of the then Madras Presidency. He traded in dried fish in partnership with the head of the fishing community of Malpe (Madhwaraj). He also traded in dry fruits imported from Arabia. His family lived lavishly. Kamath, quoting (also the late) A. Wahab Doddamane in his book Muslims of South Kanara, refers to how Abdullah’s father celebrated his eldest son’s batna (circumcision ceremony) by feeding members of all communities with their own special brand of food. Brahmins were given dakshine (monetary presents) on the occasion. Abdullah’s father had the reputation of distributing one murrah of rice every day to the poor and needy.

Abdullah was the first in Udupi to own a car. He was said to be the first one to introduce coffee as the breakfast drink. This fashion started by Abdullah has taken Udupi (a brand name now) far as hoteliers to the nation and beyond. Unlike Muslims of the time, he attended regular schools and passed SSLC. He was a well-read man, enjoyed Hindusthani classics and patronised Hindusthani musicians. He lived a disciplined life going out for walks in the morning and playing tennis in the evening. He presided over a meeting addressed by Mahatma Gandhi, during his visit to Mangalore on August 19, 1920, at the Central Maidan. He held public offices from Panchayat level to Madras Legislative Council. He was a member of Central Legislature and visited Delhi often. He was conferred by the government the title of Khan Saheb in 1909 and Khan Bahadur in 1920.

Abdullah’s generosity knew no bounds. But, at the end, his unbound charity was his undoing. After he relinquished his Presidentship of the bank in 1929, hard times overtook him and he went deeper and deeper into debt. Some said that Abdullah’s generosity exceeded his wisdom. Abdullah, who once lived like a king in a palatial house and bestowed his generosity on others, had gone broke. The turn of events had unnerved him completely.

On the morning of August 12, 1935, he was found lying unconscious in his bed. Doctors tried to revive him in vain. He was 53 years at the time of his death. People from all over the district rushed to Udupi in their thousands to pay their homage. Many had been at one time or another recipients of his largesse or witness to his kindness. Brahmins and untouchables mixed freely on that day. Shopkeepers voluntarily observed a hartal on two successive days. It was a spontaneous tribute to Udupi’s most loved and highly respected citizen.

I had heard about Abdulla Saheb. My grand father P. Ramarao was a teacher in Board High School Udupi. If I remember well Oscar Fernandez's father Rocky Fernandez was his collegue. Abdulla Saheb used to give loan to the Mutt Swamijis during paryaya and they used to return it later. Really great person he was. Felt very sorry to know about his last days. Even his house was first to get electricity generated by a local generator during those days. power was available only for 2-3 hours after sunset and there used to be street lights also.

Sir i must thank you for the article on Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim Saheb Bahadur .A person of his stature Abdullah saheb made a incredible contribution to the temple town of udupi . Apart from starting Canara Banking Corporation Udupi limited he also started a Hospital and a school in udupi. The values and ethics that he instilled was a inspiration to all and his elder nephew Andar Syed Hussain Saheb (one of founding director Syndicate bank and a member of legislative assembly from udupi ) followed his footstep on the values and ethics of his uncle . Both of them lived their life serving the society . But the last days of their lives are sadly not mentioning. Abdullah saheb certain facts have been misrepresented or omitted by both M V kamath and Wahab Doddamane .Abdullah Saheb grand nephew late Andar Syed Abdulla Hussain (ornithologist and environmentalist) had brought up this issue when the bank had completed 100 years ( 2006) . He had written in this regard to concerned people as he was descendant of Andar syed Hussain Saheb and he knew many facts of Corporation founder Abdullah saheb which had not been mentioned . But no sadly S A Hussain is no more (died 2009). I grand nephew of Andar Syed Abdulla Hussain had an great opportunity to know many thing regarding the life and times of Udupi Haji Abdullah saheb and Andar syed Hussain saheb which his family members/descendants will continuously cherish and follow.

It is to the credit of CorpBank that it has not forgotten its founder and it not only celebrates the Founder’s Day annually but also uses his photo, including in the annual report .
Contrast this with the State Bank main branch in Mangaluru. Modern banking came to Mangaluru when a branch of Bank of Madras opened on October 1, 1869. The branch was housed in a one-storey building opposite the Collectorate Gate (now DC Complex).
The first Agent (Manager) of the Mangalore branch was Edwin Blanchard Palmer, then 26 years, who held the position till 1898.He took great interest, mainly through his writings, in the development of South Canara. He remained in Mangaluru and died in 1913 and buried in Rosario Cathedral at Bolar.
It is said that an oil portrait of Palmer used to hang in the Branch Manager’s Chamber for decades even after the new building was tenanted. Inexplicably it is now missing from this spot. In the Banking Hall of the branch a list of managers is displayed, starting from K Dorairajan, Manager from December 1964 to April 1965 -5 months. But, Palmer, who headed the branch for 29 years, has no public record!

An informative & timely article on Khan Bahadur Haji Abdulla Haji Kasim Saheb of Udupi. As a member of family tree of Haji Abdualla Saheb, I would like to shed some light on some of the comments/queries raised by the esteemed readers of Daiji world.
Initial founding board members of Corporation Bank (then known as the Canara Banking Corporation Udupi limited) included Saraswat Konkans/Brahmins, 2 Muslims and a Bunt. Haji Abdualla Saheb was the founder president. The other Muslim was his brother in-law Andar Syed Abbas Saheb who was a land lord hailing from Karkala.
Both Syed Abbas Saheb and his son Khan sahib Syed Hussain Saheb, who was a barrister at law, banker and a MLC from Karkala gave immense support to Haji Abdualla Saheb, especially during the declining days of Haji Abdualla Saheb.
Haji Abdullah Saheb was deeply nationalistic and highly secular. He played a decisive role in the betterment of the society. He had the honor of presiding over the public function during the visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Mangalore in 1920.
Haji Abdullah Saheb’s fabulous wealth did not last. However the values and ethics that he instilled in his family members/descendants are continuously cherished and followed. Some of them went on to occupy high and important positions in Indian public service, Indian Army & field of education and rendered loyal & honest service to the motherland.
Thanks Daiji world for the article.

Surprise to know such a generous and legendary personality existed in Udupi. Very little was said about him. I am learning for the first time about Khan Bahadur Haji Abdullah. I was under the impression that the Corporation Bank was founded by Saraswath Konkans of South Kanara. What else is hidden in the history?

Hats off to this great personality. However, it is sad on the part of Indian Govt not to award him. Govt is awarding many unsocial and illogic personalities while turning closed eyes on actual eligible people like Abdullah. Such people need to be awarded for their contribution to nation. it is unfortunate that many anti social and anti national people are being ed for the awards.

Khan Bahadur Haji Abdulla founder of the present Corporation Bank(PSU) was a great soul.Knowing/reading about this great man should itself be a great inspiration for modern generation. His life history will not complete if we do not add the very partinent fact that Abudulla Saheb was great krishna Bhakta and daily before going to his shop he used to visit Udupi Krishna mutt area to pay respects to the presiding diety. He had close ties and rapport with Mutt people and in those days mutt's income was not significant and sufficient to run the daily affairs. When ever there was shortfall of income/daily consumebles like rice, oil etc.,in the mutt, authorities used to bring it to the knowledge of Abdulla Saheb for help.In turn Abdulla Saheb always generous to send required quantities of such things to mutt without asking for the value.
Life style of this great man is truely thilling and source of insiration for modern generation.
Let his ideals guide us all.
