Puttur, Feb 17: The town police have finally succeeded in solving the mystery surrounding a theft that took place at Salmara here a few days ago.  The police have arrested 4 persons and seized 31 sovereigns of gold and Rs 22,000 in cash.

The arrested have been identified as Abdul Salam, a resident of Salmara, Shiju, Shaji and Bava alias Pramod, residents of Calicut.  Among these Shiju alias Saiju is a notorious inter-state thief.  He had recently been released from Kannur prison.

Thereafter he went to Goa where he met Salmara Abdul Salam.  Both of them used to live by pick-pocketing in Goa.  Here they met Pramod and Shaji.  Together they hatched a plan to loot Salmara residnet Sirajuddin's house.

Accordingly they broke open into Sirajuddin's house on January 27 when all the members of his family had gone out.  The thieves had decamped with 31 sovereigns of gold and Rs 1.45 lac in cash.

The town police had registered a case in this regard and had initiated enquiry.  Based on a sure tip-off they arrested all the four at the railway station here while they were trying to escape to Kerala.
