Mangalore, Feb 19: Political leaders cutting across party spectrum paid rich tributes to Ullal MLA U T Fareed at a public condolence meeting held on the premises of Sayyid Madani Dargah at Ullal, near here on Sunday.

Fareed, a four-time MLA from Ullal, passed away on February 6.

The prayer meeting and a mass feeding programme was organised by his children.

N Dharam Singh, leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, recalled his political association with Fareed.

Stating that he and Fareed made their political debut in 1972, Mr. Singh said that Fareed strove for the development of the constituency despite his ill health.

B Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries, Muzrai and district in-charge, lauded the concern that Fareed had for the backward sections of society.

B M Idinabba, former chairman of Kannada Development Authority and former Ullal MLA who presided over the meeting, urged the senior Congress leaders to consider giving the party ticket to U T Khader, son of Fareed, for the Assembly seat.

B Janardhana Poojary, Rajya Sabha member, M Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister; Vijaya Arun, Mayor, Abdul Saleem, Deputy Mayor, Sushma Janardhan, Zilla Panchayat president; K Abhayanchadra Jain, MLA, Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MP, and U K Ibrahim Haji, president of the dargah were present.
