Udupi, Mar 29: Eviction of a few unauthorized shops at Gandhi Maidan at Kota near Brahmavar here tensed-up locals at Kota on Wednesday March 28.

The decision to evict these toddy, arrack and other petty shops was taken by district administration with a reason that they were built illegally and that they were hindering the broadening of National Highway 17.

But the eviction drive took up a hot twist when locals opposed it.  Heated argument between people and the government officials turned the situation still grim.  But the officials were clear of their mission and they succeeded in evicting the shops with the help of police.

But the toddy and arrack shop owners had something in mind.  As soon as their shops were demolished, they began selling toddy and arrack just beside the highway.    They were of the opinion that if they are not given any alternative arrangement, protest would be staged in the entire district.

Suresh, special tahsildar of Brahmavar, Sunil Kumar, police inspector of Brahmavar, Kota police inspector Gopal Nayak and Brahmavar circle inspector B P Dinesh Kumar were present during the eviction operation.   Former Udupi MP Vinay Kumar Sorake later visited the place and met the shopkeepers and assured that he would contribute his best in resolving the matter. 

Meanwhile Kota Toddy-Tappers Association has criticized the move by district administration of evicting the shops.  Association leaders Koraga Poojary and Raju Poojary led the protest.  They have also warned of district-wide protest if they are not provided with alternatives.
