Mangalore, Apr 18: “Stay away from unethical practices, be a perfect practitioner. It will reward you in the long run”, said Dr V S Acharya, state minister for medical education.

He was speaking at the 18th convocation ceremony of Manipal University at TMA Pai auditorium here on Wednesday April 18 evening.

Every one of us needs to be life-long learners. Hence, there is a need for develop and nurture a taste for reading, he said.

“A doctor should approach patients constantly. Always listen to the patients first. Do not deviate from the human approach and accept medical practices”, he advised.

Pro A Rajasekaran, president, National Board of Examiners, ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government of India, in his convocation address said “medical education should encourage problem-solving rather than information-gathering - to ensure competency rather than acquire knowledge."

Greater emphasis is to be given to solving common problems rather than searching for cases which one may or may not again see in his life, he added.

Speaking about modern medical practices, he said that modern medicine is no more an individual effort, it is a collective endeavor, individuals are trained to realize the fact that they can work efficiently as a team.

Dr Ramdas Pai, chancellor of the University declared the convocation open. Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor presented the report of the University.  Dr S Narayan Rao, CoE administered oath to the graduates.

Brig S S Pabla, pro-vice-chancellor welcomed the gathering. Dr M V Prabhu, associate dean of KMC proposed vote of thanks.
