Bantwal, Jun 16: In the wake of increasing number of dengue cases, health minister U T Khadar on Tuesday June 16 visited Bantwal primary health centre and asked the hospital staff to work on Sundays too.

He urged people to visit the nearest health centre if they suffer from fever and obtain free medical check up from the doctor and take medicines on time.

Khadar visited Bantwal in view of the contagious diseases which are spreading in the taluk and held meetings of medical officials, PDOs and Asha workers and obtained necessary details. He suggested precautionary measures to prevent increasing number of such cases.

He further instructed the rural development department, department of health and local associations to jointly work in a responsible manner. He also requested the people to cooperate with doctors in this respect.

"As daily wagers and school children are busy during the six days attending work and classes, they are not able to come to health centres. So the staff should work on Sundays to make it convenient for them," he said.

As many as 62 cases of dengue have been detected in the taluk so far, and 53 suspected dengue patients have been treated in different hospitals, and cured and discharged. Among 12 dengue patients, eight are admitted in BC Road and four people are admitted in Thumbe private hospital. No case of malaria is detected in the taluk, he informed.

District health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao said, "Medical officers should strive to root out diseases. They should visit various health centres in the taluk and obtain information."

He asked the PDOs to call meetings of cleanliness committees in the panchayat limits and give importance to cleanliness. He suggested the hotels to provide hot drinking water to the customers and asked the PDOs to ensure that.

Taluk panchayat president Yashwanth D, vice-president Vilasini, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat deputy secretary N R Umesh, district health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao, Taluk health officer Dr Manjunath, panchayat engineering department assistant executive engineer Girish K P were present.

Good idea. At the same time Khader should have informed that whoever works on Sundays will either be compensated financially or get to take another day off during the week. That would have sent the appropriate message to healthcare workers. Healthcare workers need family time as well just like rest of us. Hope this epidemic is contained at the earliest.

Health education and public awareness is the need of the hour. One should concentrate on prevention of the disease rather than treatment. Its a completely preventable disease if one keeps his surroundings clean without any stagnant water. Its difficult during monsoon, thats why you see the increase in number of incidences. But the panchayat authorities can do fogging which is the standard method of killing the mosquitoes and their larvae. Doctors too need rest like anyone else. DHO Dr Ramakrishna seems to be busy in eating uppittu, rather than creating awareness.
