Madrasas not schools if they don't impart formal education: Maharashtra govt

Mumbai, Jun 2 (PTI): Madrasas which do not teach primary subjects such as English, Maths and Science would be considered as "non-schools" and children studying in them as "out of school" students, the Maharashtra government on Thursday said.

"Madrasas are giving students education on religion and not giving them formal education. Our constitution says every child has the right to take formal education, which madrasas do not provide," State Minorities Affairs Minister Eknath Khadse said.

"If a Hindu or Christian child wants to study in a madrasa, they will not be allowed to study there. Thus, madrasa is not a school but a source of religious education. Thus we have asked them to teach students other subjects as well. Otherwise these madrasas will be considered as non-schools," Khadse said.

He added that Principal Secretary of Minority Affairs department Jayshree Mukherjee has written a letter to Principal Secretary of School Education and Sports Nand Kumar in this regard.

Khadse said the school education department has planned a survey of students that are not taking formal education on July 4.

"Students who are studying in madrasas that do not provide formal education will be treated as out of school students. Our only aim behind doing this is to ensure that every child of the minority community gets a chance to learn and come into the mainstream, get good paying jobs and have a prosperous future," Khadse said.

The minister said that out of a total 1,890 registered madrasas in the state, 550 have agreed to teach the four subjects to students.

"We are even ready to pay madrasas for giving students formal education and are ready to provide them teaching staff as well," Khadse said.

Media made it hindu muslim issue! ... madrassa, once other poor students also enrolled can keep their parents informed, if there are any wrong activites going on! so, it will be secular medium.. and which will not defame peaceful muslims!.. good step.. hail the government steps... enough of alienation of one community from other! look at the postivie impact, than nagging always!...vhe vhe vhe

Mr maunendra modi n his team may be in Maharashtra or wherever must know that its none of their business to interfere in Islamic guidance system. These ideas all coming from Nagpur's chaddi headquarters. We Muslims are completely agreed that without the study of Quran hadees sunnah any height of degree or knowledge is an incomplete concept.Nowadays lot of Islamic boarding schools imparting formal n religious education together as per their available resources.CHADDIES don't interfere. At any cost we Muslims never allow any concept like bogus useless manipulated theories which has nothing to do with practical life

Modi's election manifesto has 'Modernization of Madrasa' and he allotted peanut 100 crore for that. If he distribute 100 crore to around lacs of Madrasa will get peanut Rs 245 each. This how Feku make madrasa 'Modernized'.
Now these MH govt will not recognize Madrasa as school, here is have hidden agenda is that they will consider Madrasa and Masjid (Which doesn't have Jumaa) as illegal since these construction registered or licensed under Madrasa School.. soon obviously license will cancel.

This a Democratic country , People have right to practice their faith , be it rituals or education. Religious education has equal importance like formal education . Courts should intervene and stop this dictatorial attitude of government.

Yes madrasas are not formal schools n gives education or quran, islam n prophets of islam n doesn't run for whole day.. the function under the supervision of local mosque n run for half an hour in the morning n half an hour in the evening n parents send their children to formal schools between 9 to 5 or 7 to 3 to get formal education..its more or less like sunday schools of christians n upanayana deeksha of mutts n temples.. its part time system..

the whole concept of madrasa is misunderstood n mis represented by media n people in general n bjp n sangh parivar in particular n they called madrasas are bomb making institutions during their election campaign...vhe vhe.

There was a documentary by BBC on madrasas of Bangladesh included, where the students learn more by route & no other formal subjects, funded from overseas NGOs & they churn out pupil who are future leaders of their community into intolerant, who want to end secular government & subjugate others including minorities under sharia laws just like Pakistan where minorities get persecuted with fake blasphemy laws.
Most of this pupil support killing of bloggers who want secularism & freedom from bigots.

I dont know with what mind minister implied it...but I appreciate it...madrasa cant be counted along with formal school....Either madrasa authority should make madrassa at alternative timing in early morning or late evening when school dont function....or they should teach school subjects along in madrassa ..
Dont be limited only to madrassa subjects but unfortunately in some of the madrassas in north India it functions in that manner...

And finally being muslim it is obligatory upon us to seek knowledge as a famous hadith mentions...
    "Oh lord,Increase me in knowledge"-Quran

In 21st Century the madrasas need to teach their pupil the subjects that are needed most along with religious teaching.
They will be better off if they learn History as well, as it will teach the past & steps to be taken at present to create right history for the future.
This policy should be implemented all over the country.
